Good article... I sure hope it works out for Las Vegas in the future. This really will save the area's economy if it all pans out.

Las Vegas does need to diversify even moreso however because every city that ever busted has a on dimensional economy. And San Jose did have problems from 2000 until recently and this is straight from the mouth of a successful businessman based out of Silicon Valley.

I was there and was laid off many times in that period of time. But that city did bounce back pretty quick and the real estate prices as of now is still pretty crazy. Remember when they were going to build that large Cisco campus in the south part of the city? That was going to be a big job for the company I was with at the time. Out of all the people I know that live and work in the Valley, 90% work in some kind of tech field (software development, Voip/Data providers, Network Admin. etc..) My best friend works for a comany called Cbeyond and they offer Voice and Date services (T1, Voip and Wireless for a flat fee that is unheard of) seems to be booming from what I hear.

Julia - thanks for this article. I sent it to myself for the next time I hear someone moan "why are you going to move THERE?! the economy is going to blow up in that tourist trap....yadda yadda..."

As much as some of us moan about everything being built, fact is that it will add to the growth of the economy, as well as create thousands of jobs. Don't you think?

Some of the LV casions I believe are also involved in indian gaming. When I lived in Phoenix, there were 2 or 3 casinos near town on indian reservations ran by and with the Harrah's name. If anything, gambleing elsewhere encourages people to come to Vegas. Also, arnt most of the casinos for internet gambeling, since it introduces new people to gambleing?

You hit the nail on the head.

Since the inception of Casino gaming in NJ in 1979, the Las Vegas Casinos have only grown in # and in profits.....Atlantic City AND Indian Gaming serve to introduce peopel to a form of entertainment that they have never experienced.....after experiencing it....they want to come to VEGAS and see how it's REALLY done.

Sorry, but gaming was legalized in NJ in 1976, and Resorts Int opened in 1978, your post is another example of how it's REALLY done in LV.
