I would love to try these! Does anyone else grow these successfully? What did you do to the soil and how much water do they take? And did you get any bananas?

I tried Birds of Paradise twice. No go. The first time we got the bad winds they were toast. Canna is a good substitute in terms of color.

As far as fruits go, grapes, apricots, peaches, berries, Meyer lemon, certain plums and apples can be grown here, as well as dates and pomegranate.

I don't know anyone who has attempted bananas.

There is just no way bananas are going to work here without a greenhouse. Bananas need humidity and lots of it.

Add to the fruit list: kumquats, figs (which just go gangbusters here), limes, tangerines. My mother in law also has a ton of asian fruits going -- jujubees and similar.

Then we have nut trees -- almonds, pistachios, pecans all do well here also.

Things you wouldn't think about do well here -- romaine lettuce. Dill. Parsley in the winter. Basil in the summer.

Take note, Bird of Paradise grow really well here and there are different varieties. The ones acclimated to the desert has beautiful orange or yellow flowers. We have them at home and it grows tall with lots of flowers. The ones Im talking about does not have the same leaves as a Canna but more like tiny leaves similar to a Mimosa tree.

There is another Bird of Paradise variety that looks like Canna.

Canna is vigorous and fast growing when you water it well. Beautiful flowers and it really looks like a Banana tree when mature. It grows tall, you can use it as a border plant for privacy.

Yes, I know the Desert Bird of Paradise. To me the flowers look a little like tiny orchids. I was referring to the ones that have leaves like banana trees.

Maybe I will have to try these things in containers. Supposedly there are bananas that will fruit in a pot.

I have an area close to my pool with nothing in it. I am planning on working on improving the soil over the summer then planting SOMETHING next spring.

Now figs is a great idea! Love the idea of pistachios too. I will start reading about them.

Remember we are a town of micro-climates, Joshua trees grow 5 miles away, but can't grow here.

Strange! My next door neighbors have beautiful roses but they are an effort. I will water and fertilize but I don't want to do much else.
