Had a chance to visit the Wee Thump Joshua Tree Wilderness a few days ago and wow!

This area is impressive with a dense old growth Joshua Tree forest. Some of those trees must be approaching 1000 years old! Wee Thump means "ancient ones" in Paiute Indian.

If you go now, you might still be able to catch some of the beautiful wildflowers that I had seen. Wee Thump is also a great area for bird watching.

The topography is mostly flat and with a gradual loss of elevation while going west to east. Consequently, any hiking that's done is rather easy. Its borders are triangular shaped.

It can be approached by going south via I-15 and exiting the Nipton exit just south of Primm. Make sure to stop by the old outpost of Nipton California where you can also play lotto if you wish. Nipton is a also a stop for motorcycle riders. Continuing east and back into Nevada again and over the hill you will run into Wee Thump on you left. Look for a dirt parking area but the BLM sign is hard to see as its a few feet further in. It can also be approached via US 95 after heading west from Searchlight Nevada. Either way is a little over an hour from our metro area.

I may check this out, thanks. Around how far in is it from the Nipton I-15 exit? Parking, or a sign and circular drive - like Red Rock Canyon? Trying to picture the layout.

Wee Thump is about 18 miles off the I-15 exit. Only parking is off the road on small dirt lots to your left after you go over the hill past Nipton. No circular drive though there are dirt roads that surround it on two sides. Don't think there are any sign on the road to point it out. Go slow and look for those dirt lots. The first one you will encounter I don't believe is listed in the directions of the site I quoted below. The brown wooden BLM signs are almost hidden from the road. Nothing like Red Rock its not developed at all and virtually nobody there.
Its a small wilderness but well worth it.

Wow! What a cool place. I just got to visit Red Rock Canyon for the first time yesterday and I was impressed with the visitor center and, of course, the beautiful scenery there. I went to Lake Mead and Valley of Fire earlier in the week, and all the natural beauty in the region is making me very excited about potentially moving here.
