Since we are always trying to be cooler and save energy, it makes no sense to me. Why do we have dark colored roofs that absorb heat? They should be white! I was discussing this with a friend who says everyone in Vegas with one of these roofs should buy 10 gallons of marine white paint, roll it on and save on the electric bill.

Would this work and save an appreciable amount of money?

Greece in particular has a lot of white roofs. But it probably wouldn't work as well with tile.

Yes. Although I would spray deck paint on the roof tiles before I'd grab a paint roller.

The reason we don't use white tiles is simple -- aesthetics. People prefer faux terracotta tiles. If I was planning on living here until I die, I'd spray my tiles white. But I'm planning on moving the second I'm able. And my house is worth more inefficient but attractive.

If the value of your house is important to you, get a powered gable fan and vent the attic instead. Same result. And still a net savings compared to air conditioning.

Or go one step further and coat your roof in mirrors. Im guessing it's probably illegal though due to aircrafts.

I wonder what the typical Vegas house would look like with a white roof. I think I will have to practice photoshopping one to get an idea!

I don't think there's anything aesthetically wrong with white roofs, that's what color roofs are after a big snow storm. Perhaps that's a memory many who've moved wish to avoid?

A white roof will not have a large impact to energy efficiency over a brown roof. There is some gains vs. a black roof, but very little, based on statistical measurement. The reflectivity, material, insulation of the roof and opportunities for shading by trees are the means to help energy efficiency.

If you have the yard space, simply planting trees in the path of the sun would have a HUGE impact to keeping your house cool. That's if you have the space, no HOA rules, or water restrictions that prevent this.

Other things to implement are double/triple glazed windows with low emission film.

You cannot possibly live in a two-story Las Vegas house if you think planting trees is the answer.
