We used to keep our garbage bins in the garage when we had twice a week pickup. They switched us to once a week pickup several years ago and it was unbearable. Gagging while getting in and out of the car because of the smell. It was terrible before as well, but not as bad as it would be now. We store them in the backyard by the gate. Even though your friend has a tiny yard, put them close to the gate like we do. To minimize the smell in the back yard if you go out there often, put up a small barrier around it to shield the smell somewhat. And of course always bag your garbage. That is one of the rules of Republic.

They now make garbage bags with febreze baked in to the plastic, and it's surprisingly effective.

Covered regular sized trash can gets a 32 gal. liner every Monday pickup. That bag goes into the huge republic receptacle. Lots of space left over for branches if the trees or bushes get pruned.

I live in Tucson where we routinely have 100+ heat most of the summer. I keep my garbage can and a separate recycling can in the garage and I have no problems with it ... and my elderly mother lives here and I have to put her used Depends in there. I think the secret is having a can with a very secure lid. Waste Management collects our garbage and supplies our can which has a very heavy lid on a hinge.

When it's really hot outside, I throw a couple of dryer sheets in there and, of course, I bag all the trash and tie the bags securely. If I have raw meat scraps or bones, I keep them in a plastic bag the freezer until garbage day so they aren't rotting in there. As AdamSelene mentioned above, there are garbage bags sold design specifically to absorb odors.

Our garbage is bagged and yes it will literally stink up the garage and your car. My association can send all the violation notices about my trash cans being visible from the street- fine me I don't care.-I'm not keeping trash cans in the garage during summertime.

Do you have a garbage disposal? If so, there's no reason to throw anything away that will spoil or smell. The only special consideration I have to make is for the trays raw chicken breast come in - those go in the freezer until trash day.

Bag everything that should be bagged. Start with a clean can. I prefer bleach. Put a stick-up on the lid and some charcoal in the bottom of the can.

We store our trash cans in the garage. Our trash cans have hinged lids provided by the trash company. We use the plastic bags from grocery stores for our trash. I only notice a smell upon opening the trash can but once it's closed, no smell.
