The key is to slow them down enough that they give up and move on to a different house.

^^ THIS. Nothing is free - slow police response times and lousy schools are the price to be paid for living in a low-tax state.

Coming from the northeast, there were local municipal cops patrolling every corner and hiding behind bushes to catch speeders along with loads of state troopers on the interstate. I would always stop at yellow lights and would be mindful of my speed. In my two years in LV I don't think I've ever seen a cop hiding out to catch speeders - in a way it is nice, but probably a sign of the understaffed department. Back east, one time I was out of town and saw a vehicle I did not recognize parked in my driveway on my security camera. I figured it was a neighbor's home repair contractor "borrowing" my driveway, but I called the local police to check it out and they arrived within a few minutes. I'd be laughed at if I made such a request to the LVMPD. Although on the flip side I'm saving over $20k in taxes annually.

From what I understand, the LVMPD is pretty well-paid, but there just doesn't seem to be enough of them. If it's anything like the northeast, there's likely a waiting list to land a police officer job since the pay is decent and the retirement benefits are cushy (not sure about LV, but they sure are in the northeast).

The old joke is "When danger is minutes away, the police are hours away."

Your best bet for stopping burglaries, is:
1) get an alarm company (actually set it up, don't just put the signs in the yard or get the alarm and not connect to a company)

2) get an alarm that has video connected to a company like ADT--if they actually see a burglar in your home, they can call the police directly, if they don't know why the alarm is going off, they have to investigate before they can call police.

3) get metal screen doors for all outside doors.

4) make sure your garage door is connected to the alarm system, not just the door from the garage to the house.

5) get the security plastic on all your windows--make sure they put it under the outdoor stripping so that it won't just push in if someone tries to break in through your windows.

6) don't make any ostentatious displays of wealth outside your house--no nice Mercedes or BMWs in the driveway (use the garage for what it was designed for, not a storage room), no huge amount of Christmas decorations, etc.

7) make sure there is no mail, newspaper or UPS/Fedex deliveries when you are away.

8) let a good friend know (hopefully a neighbor) when you will be away and be able to check on your house occasionally ("I thought you were moving, I didn't know that U-Haul truck wasn't supposed to be there).

9) Set up a "Ring" type buzzer on your front door (the type that you can answer from your cell phone even if you are away from home.)

10) get a large housebroken dog.

The same calls in Henderson typically get response in 15 minutes (occasionally work there too).
I read that online as well and am hoping when Station #10 opens next year the added officers will reduce response times. I wonder if they get a call about a burglary in progess, do they respond faster since the crime is in progress and not just a follow up. Thanks for the info.

All good advice, thank you! Will probably go the 'alarm company with video' set up and possibly Ring as well. Even if I'm gone just a few hours to the Strip or something, I don't want to worry about someone possibly being in my house/condo.

Yeah I’d rather the low taxes personally but it depends on the state. In highest-in-the-US-besides-CA taxes Oregon, trust me the police is no better than Vegas. They are vastly understaffed and you never need to worry about speeding, there won’t be anyone there. Beaverton Police is better and more attentive, probably like Henderson, so it depends more on the city than the state honestly.

Police jobs in almost any place are incredibly tough to get. I don’t know why people think it’s easy, the vast majority of people couldn’t get a police job if they wanted. It was my best friend’s life dream and he had a second college degree before he got a job 4 years later. He had been a cadet 4 years earlier, passed the training, two black belts, speaks two languages, taught Team Oregon motorcycle classes so very proficient in motorcycles too. He still couldn’t get a job at any of the 20 nearby departments and got a job 100 miles away. It’s extremely competitive, like 3-5% of applicants competitive at most. He makes good money and bought a house his first year on the job.

Listen to you cucks. The answer is get a gun, maintain that gun, train on that gun, and be willing to use that gun. A genuine cop who isn't evil will endorse your prerogative to do that and will rejoice when you liquidate a truely dangerous criminal.

Collective security doesn't work because it always gets corrupted and you might as well wish upon a star when it gets deadly. The police aren't there to help you. The police shouldn't even exist. They're just an occupational army. Go down the bullet list of life observations about police: they're just an occupational army.

From the movie Shooter: "It's not the Wild West anymore, you can't just clean up the streets with a gun, even though sometimes that's exactly what's needed."

Big dog. Replace your door jams with something a bit stronger, and large screws. Put a stick in your slider and windows when you are not at home. Get a sign that says “ smile, you’re on camera” near your door.

Of course they burglarize Summerlin more. It’s where the money and good stuff is. You think they want my jacked up six year old tv?

We had the remodelers tear ours out, Hate sliders.

Door jam replacement is a bit tougher.
