Does anyone know if I as a Nevada resident, can go to California and buy a vehicle from a private individual, then drive it back to Las Vegas?
I'm thinking, if I get insurance on the car, the plates normally stay on the vehicle when sold in California, so the vehicle is registered (not in my name), I can drive it straight back home to LV, then either surrender the CA plates or return them to the seller.
Does this sound feasible, or will I have to deal with the DMV mess in NV or CA prior to purchasing the car?

I'm guessing someone here will know.

Get a bill of sale from the private party so that you don't pay sales tax. Get it insured, smogged and then inspected at the dmv and then get your registration and plates done. Easier if you make an appointment before you get to the dmv. I bought an out of state car and just turned in the plates when I registered it.

Yes, you are correct. As you stated, plates stay with the vehicle in CA. So you can simply buy the car and drive it back with the CA plates on it.

You'll have to have a VIN inspection done at NV DMV, smog, signed off CA title, and NV insurance paperwork before you can register it. You don't need a bill of sale, but it wouldn't hurt. The NV DMV doesn't care about the bill of sale.

CA cars are easier since the plates stay with them.

That has been my experience also.

Yep, just walk in with a clean title and turn in the Cali plates. Make sure you have the VIN inspection and smog done before you enter into the DMV. There is a VIN inspection booth in the back of the DMV and its usually is a short wait.

Don't even need to do that. Hang 'em up on your garage wall.
