People who don't pay for their homes don't respect them. There is no "at cost" because no matter how nice a unit you provide, they will always destroy it.

IMHO there should be a minimal work requirement associated with receiving a welfare check. Don't like it? Get a job. There are plenty of trashed up streets, graffiti, parks, etc that need to be cleaned up all over this city.

Being on welfare shouldn't be easy or pleasant. There should also be time limits. I don't care how many kids LeKeisha decides to pop out - if she's on it longer than 2 years she gets the boot.

Doctors really want us to stay home until some time in June. Trump just extended the social distancing guidelines till April 30th. I'm getting stir crazy at home. Picked four trash bags of weeds the other day and still have weeds to go but at least we get outside. Allergies are killing me though.
Damn, I was hoping it was 4 trash bags of weed!

There's a lot of work that needs to be done in this country. Solar, wind, high speed rail, vertical farms, transit oriented development.

I was on board with the green new deal. Not sure what Trump's plan will be if he gets re-elected which is looking more likely as we move towards November.

Gee, wonder what your choice of name implies.

Also, the $1.25M houses in DC used to be in the ghetto. HUGE swaths of NE & SE DC were gentrified when prices went up. If you don't think it can happen, ask the residents of Oakland.

As far as free rents go... I don't seem most of these landlords staying in business. Say you own a 500 unit apt complex and half your tenants don't make the rent this month... how are you going to stay in business?

I find this whole "moratorium on mortgage and evictions" to be a ****ing joke because those bills will still be due in 90 days and where will all the people who don't have it, get that money? Answer: they won't. So whether they are actually evicted now or in 90 days is irrelevant - they're going to be evicted. Meanwhile, the landlord will file bankruptcy and the bank will foreclose on the complex and then EVERYONE will be put out, even the ones who paid their rent. Its brilliance, I tell you. Absolute brilliance.

I'm sorry, but there needs to be a much more comprehensive plan than that. Again, I'm not in any way a socialist, but if you're going to have a government mandate that people CANNOT work then the government needs to mandate an income for those people to cover the losses.

I see the writing on the wall... this is the backslide into socialism all the demo-commies have been waiting for the last 10 years. The progressives are putting this entire country into a position we're not going to be able to get out of.
Operating costs for each rental is about 30% of the rent for those big guys with 500+ units since they have more overhead than a mom and pop landlord.

I know I said that mom and pop landlords might shed their portfolios after the free rent give away but they have lower operating costs and thus better potential to survive.

Green new deal is way off in left field. While I can appreciate the idealistic goals there, implementing widespread socialism isn't the way to accomplish them.

Plenty of immigrants from socialist/communist countries in this town. Talk to some of them and ask them why they came here.

There is a reason that every single communist/socialist country has disintegrated. It works great until you run out of everyone else's money.

Like I keep saying, these ideas... the same ones being taken up by the Dems this century... sound great on paper and in the short term. They never, ever work out in real life. If the 20+ countries that have collapsed using that political system doesn't prove it to someone, I don't know what will.

The idealism there makes a bunch of assumptions about the overall "general goodness" of people, and these assumptions are incorrect. There are a lot of scumbags in the world. They can and will take advantage of those situations any and every time and any way they can. The idea of a communist/socialist utopia is DOA because you will never, ever get everyone to go along with it.

Its just like the Californians who move here and everywhere... their ideas are spectacular failures in their home state... but if they just try it again somewhere else "one more time"... that's the problem. Every time it fails these same people turn around and say "well, we'll just do a little bit differently *this* time." At some point you've just got to decide to pull your head out of your ass and see the forest for the trees.

Well there's an interesting topic. What, exactly do you think it implies?

It kind of puts Anne Frank's 2 years of hiding in perspective, doesn't it?
