Hello All,

I would like to ask you all for advice on a bad situation with my cousin. Over the last few weeks, my 55 year old male cousin has been spending several days at a time on the streets. He lost his apt last year due to reduced work hours. He then bounced around Airbnbs, then wound up in his car. Car broke down. As of yesterday hes been out on the streets over a week. He works, though just 30 hours weekly so far. Hes college educated and speaks spanish and one other foreign language.

He lived with his parents until late in life. He does not gamble, drink or use drugs. Hes been in that city for 25 years so its not vices causing this. Im aware his not getting more established before losing them had a hand here-moot point though now given the urgency.

Hes gets a cheap motel room here and there but thats it. He has no family local to help. Shelters tend to be rough, and hes very timid and is vulnerable and it shows. He tried rooms on CL but came across either scams or bad people. I mentioned FB marketplace as an alternative, but not sure if he looked into it.

Are there any safer shelters for someone like this? Cheap rooms maybe not advertised widely? Anything?

The climate can be punishing enough. He told me he doesnt sleep due to fear of others with no shelter. I live on the other side of the country, and cant financially support him. He also doesnt want to move to the NE. He got some help from a local synagouge but it was limited.

Any advice is appreciated. Its gotten to the point im waiting for a call from LVPD hes dead or in the hospital. The lack of sleep, proper rest, food, the climate and other homeless or bad people is a real risk. I told him this, though hes putting on a confident face he will suffer none of this at all. Hes wrong. He also got a minor respiratory illness thats been going around. Thats just a start.

Thanks to anyone who reads and comments. I hesitated posting this all, but its all ive got now. I will respond fast to any questions. Im a longtime member based on my experiences with some great people on this site. Only place I would ever consider.

D. Scott

In Reno many seniors are renting out one of their bedrooms for around 800/month with ability to use the rest of the house. People often post listings on Facebook marketplace or Nextdoor.

Sounds like he has an income problem. What does he do and how much does he earn?

Someone (probably the OP) will need to fly out there and get this guy back on his feet. Probably to the tune of 10k of (one time) assistance. Rentals under 1000/ month are available. Probably will need help (first/ last/ deposit) and a co-signer for the apartment. He will also need a reliable used car. This is a tall ask, but this is what kinfolk do -- my mother once said, I don't make loans to family, but I will consider a once-per-lifetime gift instead.

At 12/ hourly (the state minimum) and 30 hours per week, he should be grossing at least 360 per week. He will also become eligible for a lot of government aid at those poverty wages.

He'll need a second job, but if he lives extremely frugally, he should be able to put things back together.

Once he stabilizes, first thing he needs to do: build up a 3-month emergency fund.

FB marketplace was suggested. He has no car and works in LV currently.

I suggested a 2nd job. I can fly out there, but I cant just drop 10k like that. I did send him some money. He got hotel rooms and bought some essentials. Problem is he winds up right back out there. Vicious cycle with this. Thank you for your reply and post.

This site is coming through again for me. Thank you all again.

My point was that if this cheaper option is available in Reno it’s likely available in Vegas. Because Vegas is bigger there’s probably even more seniors that need the money so are renting out rooms. You don’t usually need a big deposit to get in. He could look close to work or on a bus line. It’s a sad situation.
