I currently live in San Diego, but I need to move from my current residence soon. I'd like to stay relatively close so I can visit friends and family easy, but at the same time I'm thinking about leaving California due to frustration with the state government. Las Vegas is near the top of my list. I like the idea of living in an exciting neighbourhood.

I'd like to get a studio on or near the Strip. I have about 100k saved up, but no proof of continuing income. Haven't decided if I'd be renting or buying. Some of the listings I see for 1 bedroom condos seem dirt cheap, like less than 50k. What exactly is the catch here?

I currently do web development work online, and I plan to continue to do so as a means of support. This, incidentally, means I'll be less affected by the traffic that I understand is a problem in Vegas. However, if that fails, and I need to find another job, would being able to speak Mandarin Chinese provide me with any advantage in the tourism industry?

Everyone I talk to that has moved from/to California is amazed at the difference in price of living all-around.

Self employed with 100k in the bank... Renting wise it shouldn't be too hard.
Traffic isn't that bad.

There isn't much to complain about here...what you hear is just people used to Vegas trying to find something to complain about.
50 degrees isn't cold.
95 degrees and 5% humidity with a breeze is not hot. (100+ degrees in the sun is rough...but get tinted windows and make sure your A/C is working.)
No OKC tornados. No FL hurricanes. No SF earthquakes.

Good luck with everything.

I say with the utmost respect, but if you have 100k in the bank and cannot draw the conclusion that renting is not going to be -any- issue for you, maybe you're not ready for "The Big Sin."

You show your bank statement to the property management. The approval will follow soon thereafter. Period.

Thanks for the encouragement. About how much do you expect a single person would have to spend on food and other essentials?

My savings are mostly the result of a very successful investment. My monthly income is significantly lower than that would indicate.

I just now realized the typo I made in the title of this thread.

I bet knowing Mandarin would help you A LOT in getting a job in a casino.

I have seen many casino jobs that listed speaking Mandarin as a requirement. Good luck with your move!

If you want to rent a 1 bdrm you could find a nice place in Summerlin for 600/month. If you want to purchase you can buy that same condo for 65k.

It looks nice, but I'm hoping for something close to the strip. I'm looking at Allure for the time.

Is violent crime a big problem in Vegas?

You can't afford to buy anywhere strip convenient.

Head for a rental in the Meridien. Lots of reasonable rentals and a nice place for the strip oriented.

I agree Mandarin may well be leverageable into a pretty good strip job.

Violent cr4ime is not a problem with normal care.

Thanks for the info.

See, that's actually something I'm confused about. Most strip condos seem out of my price range, but when I look at a site like this: http://www.lasvegascondomania.com/ar...EGAS-STRIP.php, it seems there are a handful of units listed at too-good-to-be-true prices. What's up with that?

EDIT: Oh, I see. Most of the really cheap places aren't actually all that strip convenient.
