Hello everyone.. My husband is coming out in 2 weeks for a job interview. We are doing a ton of research on the area and places to live, schools, etc. I was curious if anyone here has any children with special needs and how are the schools concerning this? We have a 6 year old son who has autism. Currently he is about to start 1st grade in an inclusion class in NJ. We don't know if dh will get the job, or if we would take it if offered, but want to find out all we can to make an informed decision. Thanks for any replies..

Tina

CCSD uses discrete trial teaching and has had Autism Partnership consult with them since 1999. They have the whole continuum of placements and since Nevada is a categorical state, they have self contained autism units with an absolute max of nine kids. I would definately visit the school with your son's IEP in hand if you find a neighbood you like--before you buy.

Default Schools

Visit the school and try to meet your child's teacher. Some schools are trying to move to the inclusion model where students are put in general education with special education support. Coming in with an out of state IEP the school will have 45 days to retest your child and determine placement. During that 45 days they will follow your child's out of state IEP. Try to talk to your child's teacher before relocating. It isn't so much the school as the teacher!
