thanks yellow snow! I just missed your post. I agree with your attitude! The truth is, my life in illinois has become QUITE boring. it would be great if I were married with kids, but all my friends are married....I stay home alone a lot of weekends and its getting really boring!!!

the job is around UNLV if I wasn't clear...

If I was in your position, I would look for a casita to rent or something short term. I agree you won't love living right in the UNLV area. But it would be nice if you could be there for a while and figure out where you really want to be. There are legions of apartments there. If you are close to a major street, you will be on a bus line. If you can take a bus to the monorail, you can get to anything on the strip. There's also a bus that runs the strip.

There is a lot to do in Vegas. I play tennis, hike, run, ski, and swim. I like living in the desert and the heat. I like the casinos and gambling too. I have a budget for that and when the money is gone, no more gambling till next month. You can meet people from all over and they are just like people everywhere else. Explore downtown too. Better odds gambling, lower minimums, and just more fun. Your gambling money will last a lot longer. Easier parking too!

And you never have to cook unless you just want to!

where would you recommend I look for housing that would be somewhat convienient? I dont mind driving a bit. (I am used to a 25 mile commute) but I think I want to be close enough to take taxi's to the strip...though have not completley made up my mind about this.

thanks!
I would worry more about where you were working. One of the nice things about living here is you can generally minimize the commute. Taxi from the strip starts at about $15 and goes to $50. You want low taxi fares you need to live on the strip or very close by. That is likely challenging in other dimensions. Not impossible though. Small apartments near strip may be practical depending on what your budget allows.

I'm not sure of my budget yet, but I would consider anything under $900 for a one bedroom or a studio reasonable and within my realm. Beyond $1000 a month is a bit much for me, since I will still be paying a few bills in illinois for a few months.

Its not terribly important to be able to take taxis to or from the strip but it would be a nice option to have.

Are there decent apartments on or near the strip?

There are a couple of places. The best deal is likely a recent conversion on the LVCC property. Nice in there and walk to the strip. Behind the Hilton. Guard gated and reasonably tight security. Start around 900.

There are some other condos in the 800-1000 in the area but security and amenities will not be as good.

I'm single and 27, moved to Vegas 5 months ago and I love it. One word of advice I wouldn't move here without a job already lined up. I'm a recruiter and have notice that it's not easy to find a "good" job unless you are in hospitality.

It's tough to say who likes this place and who doesn't. I have met all sorts of people here from all around the world.

Few people I have met that had Master's degrees and couple hated Vegas that couldn't stand the environment of attitudes here and left, but others have stayed.

Midwesterners the most I have met love visiting this place, but will never move here in a million years. Then again I have met one that has lives here for nearly a decade.

The only way to know is to move here and find out for yourself.

I'm a midwesterner (Michigan native) and we moved there. Lived there almost 10 years. Hubby loved it. I liked some things and didn't like some things.
