With oil prices going down so much this doesn't seem like the best time to ask for such a large increase. And they said the recent merger would help them save money and keep rates down, I never believed that for a moment.

Sucks, They will get it. But what can we do, refuse to do business with them. LOL It is not right because there is not another company that we can go to!

Its a slap in my face when I do all I can to keep my power bill low like keeping the ac down, changing over to energy efficient bulbs... etc and then they increase the rates again. Wonder why I even bother.

I remember the days back in California when we actually just paid for electric we used. The same in Utah. We didn't have to pay for them building more things, etc.
Why can't they do that? We are conserving as much as possible without dying...hopefully the rate hike will be rejected.

Given NV Energy's apparent poor timing, solar energy might be one way to minimize concerns with a rate hike.

Has anyone around here either thought about or installed solar energy? I'm amazed more people don't do it around here, given all the sun & good weather. Perhaps it has a bit to do with the transient nature of people in Las Vegas, with a lot of renters. Otherwise, it seems like a no-brainer.

I know the initial financial outlay is large, which is probably what scares off a lot of people. That said, from what I've researched there are government tax credit programs and/or rebates to help offset the cost. There are supposed to be new forms of solar available, a multi-layer film/roll material which is far less expensive than traditional solar panels. I *think* I've seen these on some houses around Las Vegas, but can't say for sure ...

At any rate, I'd love to hear opinions & suggestions from those who have had some exposure to solar energy ...

I think you are right on two points. I would consider solar for my home, but I do not think I will be in it long enough to balance the cost. Also, the initial expense is something that has limited me from giving it serious consideration.

I would be interested in solar, but don't know anything about it. Do you know ballpark costs and what it actually does? Is it something that has to be approved by homeowners review boards?
