My girlfriend and I are thinking of moving out to Vegas some time this year. We have been out there a bunch of times but not since we have been thinking of moving so we never really paid attention to much off the strip. We are coming out at the end of the month and want to drive around to check out different neighborhoods to get an idea of how we may like it there. We will be renting (at least at first) and want a reasonably priced (we currently live on Long Island and pay $1000/month for a studio apartment) but safe area. From what I have read, Summerlin, Henderson and Green Valley seem to be the nicest, while North Las Vegas, Downtown, Central and East (Paradise) should be avoided. Is this correct? Do you have any other suggestions as to where we should check out. Any advise I may not know for someone looking at apartments? Would you suggest renting in a gated community or a house? Zip codes for these would be helpful too so I can find them on the map. Thanks.

i wouldn't live in a gated community unless its guard-gated...north las vegas has some nice areas, not my taste, but they are nice, just like Silverado Ranch does as well...I also wouldn't disregard all of Paradise or the south/northwest...With your price range of 1000 you could probably find something with 2 or 3 bedrooms in Silverado Ranch or the southwest...We pay less than that per month for a 2 bedroom house near Silverado Ranch in the South Strip area...

north is decent.. rule of thumb is north of craig, west of 15... stay away from nellis... 89081 is where my rental house is, never had a problem... i agree about the gates.. big deal, bump them and they open.. some of the best areas are in north las vegas (aliante)

When I lived out the I lived in the Summerlin area and it was very nice. Its far enough away from the strip where you dont have to always deal with it but close enough that its not a hassle to go hang out there and/or go to work if u work in one of the casinos. Def. a great area and I will be moving back to Vegas in Sept and will be looking to live in that area again.

I paid $1050 a month for a very good sized 2Bd/2bth and it was in a very nice gated community with 24/7 pool, gym etc.. The zipcode where I was is 89117

Summerlin and Green Valley are typically considered the nicest areas of the valley. If you have the cash to spend (which you seem to), those would be the areas I'd choose from. I agree with the person who recommended 89117. It's a great area close to tons of nice, new development.

The Centennial Hills area would also be a good pick. Aliante is nice for adults, but the schools aren't the greatest (if that's a concern).

The elementary and middle school in Aliante is good. What you mean is the high schools the kids in Aliante go to. There aren't any high schools IN Aliante yet, they go to the one's nearby.
Aliante is not an adult only community. There is an adult section for 55+, but the rest of the community consists of several neighborhoods with families.
