When we moved here, we lived in an apartment. We were in an inner courtyard. I mention that as it may bear on my question.

What is this white stuff in our new house? It forms within 1 day on TV screens, counter tops etc. Is this desert dust? Is it city pollution?

We live in a gated community which is not near any major thruway or manufacturing plants of any kind.

Is this stuff dangerous? I know I have had to start taking allergy meds since moving here. I'm just really curious if anyone is experiencing the same atmospheric fallout? I may end up passing from over cleaning.

Do I need to caulk all of the windows or what? All thoughts are appreciated.

Probably just dust. The desert's full of it, and the wind kicks it up.

Do you own a bird? Most, particularly parrots, put off a TON of white powdery dust.

Dust is a fact of desert life. The more out of the way of the urban core, the more dust.

My wife is a bird. Does that count?

Thanks to all for verifying my suspicions. No wonder my sinuses get so dried out. It seems like this stuff would be harmful long term. We have 3 humidifiers, maybe that will save our lungs to some small degree. Oh well, let me go sniff some saline solution before my brain dries out as well. Thx.

the BEST way to live with the 'desert mist' is to NEVER EVER dust......when you sit a glass down...ALWAYS use the SAME spot for future glasses....NEVER write your name in the dust......if you do this successfully, it will just look like you have matte finish furniture.

The "white stuff" could be coming from all those humidifiers which are famous for breaking down the water vapor into chemical "dust" particles. I wouldn't use one for that reason. Your lungs are better off breathing dry air than humidifier dust. Try it without the humidifiers and see if it goes away. Didn't you come here to get away from humidity? Humidifiers cause nasty molds that can kill you too. Those stinky swamp cooler pads people have in/on their homes are the worst. I don't think anyone has ever proved that humidifying a home is good for you. In fact I've read a lot of articles that say just the opposite, and I know how my bod has reacted to them.

Oh yeah. What a diff being there instead of here in MI. Of course, there is so much moisture here-I can see the white crap all over the ground outside. But, I have not had to use saline drops and my skin is not as dry. It's crazy how I can tell right away.

I still prefer your white stuff to mine.

the white stuff on the ground is USUALLY alkali....it grows the heaviest in the low parts of the valley [Lamb and Charleston] after a summer rain followed by some heavy heat, it looks like foam on the vacant lots there.
