I'm visiting Las Vegas next month, and would like to know if it's possible to drive into the desert?

I know that LV is IN a desert...but what I'm looking for an isolated area away from the city.

Is there any good/safe places that I could go to? Especially at night.

You can just drive to the outskirts of town, if you want to star gaze, or if you want to camp there are several parks in a 50 mile area, if your looking to do something "more" then I can't offer any advice other then, DO NOT buy the supplies at 7-11, go to walmart, or home depot.

July is NOT the month to go traipsing across the Mojave desert but if you must, at least stick to a place like Valley of Fire State Park

Valley of Fire State Park | Nevada State Parks

or...

if it's stargazing you're interested in Tonopah is rated number one...

Tonopah Star Trails - Tonopah,Nevada

Tonopah also has Bobbie's Buckeye Bar and the Tonopah Test Range/Air Base which makes for other things to do.

By USA Today..

Baker, NV is known to have some of the darkest skies in the country, and Great Basin NP in fact has the darkest skies of any NP. There's an annual star party that'll be taking place there on the weekend of the 16th. The Las Vegas Astronomical Society will be there, as will I.

The Tonopah Test Range is open to the public??? I thought this was part of Area 51 (or more specifically Area 51 was part of it), meaning deadly force authorized.

Only hundreds of thousands of square miles, but who's counting.

It looks like everyone is assuming you want to star gaze; maybe you said that in another post. But tell us what is it you wish to do out there? That might help us point you in the right direction.

But, you answered your own question ─ Las Vegas is IN the desert; the Mojave Desert. That means we are surrounded by all desert, all the time, for hundreds of miles in any direction. There are practically NO small towns out there beyond the edge of the city, at least for miles and miles, and miles.

And once you leave the MOJAVE Desert, going south or east you will cross into the SONORA Desert, and going north you will come to the GREAT BASIN Desert. Practically the whole western half of the U.S. is either desert or mountains, and there are even thousands of desert-mountains (e.g., no trees on them).

It's not like most states where you run into another community every five miles (or a day's ride by horse). It's not the least bit congested, and very little traffic, except for I-15 South toward LA. There aren't many HIGHWAYS in Nevada, but there are many HIGHWAY SIGNS in Nevada that will say "NO GAS FOR 100 MILES". And many people look at it and say it is entirely barren; but it's full of life; they just don't look close enough.

The Test Range is not open to the public, but you can get a tour if you sign up in advance. I believe you can still do that at the Atomic Testing Museum. Area 51, Groom Lake, is in the northern part of the test range. The whole range is larger than many eastern states, and it is guarded by some of the toughest looking guys you'll ever see. Wonder onto the Test Site and they'll put you in jail; wonder onto Area 51 and you will disappear.
