Different parts of the country seem to have different standards about tipping.

Where I grew up in Montana, people didn't tip (and I graciously declined tips when they were offered). Waiters and waitresses were the exception.

When I travelled to Hawaii, I didn't see a need to tip anyone during the trip (except for waiters/waitresses).

In Vegas, it seems like everyone is would like to be tipped, from the shuttle van driver to the casino workers to the maids that clean the room to the person that checks your bag.

My question is: Who are the people who you must tip? Who are the people who are frequently tipped but it's not obligatory? And who are the people who want tips but it's complety optional and no one should be upset if they don't get tipped?

For the record, I am never offered tips in my profession except by potential vendors (which are really bribes, so I always decline them) and the only occasions in previous positions where I was offered tips I always declined them.

Bell hops, taxi driver, cocktail waitress, poker dealers, bartender, valet.

The good thing is that valet $2-3 on pickup is good. Taxi $3 is ok. Cocktails and bartenders are $1 a drink. Poker dealers $1 anytime you win a pot that is a few bets or more in size.

If you start going to clubs, it gets stupid.

Maids...I usually tip $3 a day...just leave it on the pillow. Lots of people don't, but I find they take better care of the room if you do.

Poker floorpeople. I'll usually toss them a redbird IF I am going to play at the room several times during the trip and if I'm expecting the room to issue me a comp that is not on the players card(ie Mirage and Bellagio).

Any floor table games. Just depends. I usually don't tip if I lose unless the people are something special. I've never tipped the pit at Stratosphere a single penny on the craps tables and never ever will. Suppose its moot because I won't play there at all since their employees at the craps tables are easily the biggest jerks of all time. OTOH, I lost $240 at Harrahs earlier this week, but the employees were so overwhelmingly nice, polite, and entertaining, that I threw them the change($8) when I cashed out. If I win, I tip unless the employee was a jerk.

The guy who calls the next taxi forward at the casinos. Utterly worthless position and they do nothing for me so I never tip them.

If you win a handpayout on a slot machine.

I live in Vegas, so the hotel and/or taxi tipping doesn't apply to me. Even when I was a tourist, I never gave them anything. They charge way to much for the rooms anyway. I will also say I never, ever tip dealers. You are already bucking the house advantage, which they are getting a cut off. I only tip waitresses in restaurants, and cocktail waitresses in the casino. That is it. This tipping thing has gotten way out of hand. Would you believe that I went and got my car's emission test on Friday, and the station has a tip jar say "tips strongly encouraged." Give me a break, when is it going to end?

Drunk you don't tip housekeeping or dealers? Really? I always tip the maids but then I like extra towels and I tip the dealers because they are being nice and are fun to be around. I don't tip crabby dealers though. I also tip Bartenders, the valet, and anyone else I feel deserves it.

You have to remember tho that THEY control the door.....if they don't blow the whistle...the cab doesn't move and if you don't tip....they will bend into the cab to thank you [AS they blow the whistle for the next cab]

I personally do not tip hotel personal or dealers l. But, I do tip bartenders. I forgot about that one. I never have gone to a valet, so I can not say whether or not I would tip them.

We always tip anyone who gives us any type of added service, including the guy who blows the whistle for us at the taxi stands. We figure tips into our budget when we go to Las Vegas.

I always tip the ballet parking attendant. I figure if a guy is gonna dress up in a tutu to bring me my car I shouldn't upset him.

Where the heck is that NY dude? I'm tired of covering his comedy routine for him?

Where do the parking people dress in tutus, Buzz? It'd be worth it to see something that funny. Also, tip cabbies, since I'm still trying to be one.
