UNLV is a large (30,000+ students) URBAN university (most students live off campus). Haven't asked recently, but it was said to cater to more working people who go to school at night than to those who go to class during the day. Don't know if that's still true. It looks like any other university during the day to me.

Shopping is a contact sport here. Tour busses stop at the malls. When Mexico devalued the peso one time three malls nearly went bankrupt. One of those is now doubled in size (Fashion Show Mall), and it has the highest profit per square foot of any mall in the country, if not the world. I don't like to give the impression that everything here is on the Strip, but within a two mile section of the Strip there is more shopping than most cities have in the whole town. That's because all the hotels have shopping areas, and some are pretty large malls such as Caesars Forum Shops, and the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood. Off Strip there are several malls, including factory outlet malls. The newest mall design is to build them like old fashioned outdoor town centers. I like the design, but it's more comfortable to walk between stores indoors.

Car insurance is a little higher here because of lawyers and tourists. You probably have seen this problem down there too...we get drivers from every state, and they all have different driving styles. Yesterday within five miles of my house I had five cars pull out in front of me as though they didn't see me coming. I wear out a horn every 10,000 miles. Just kidding.

As far as wimmin, I have one and that's all I can handle. The really hot girls you see in casinos are looking for really hot guys with really big wallets usually. And you never know which ones are working girls that and come here on weekends from LA to supplement their teaching salaries. But I remember the times I was more or less single it could be frustrating. Still, I had more than my share at times. The best place to meet girls here is same as anywhere... at work, anywhere there are law offices, at church, parks, and the absolute best place is in a mall or supermarket. There are a lot of beautiful wimmin here. I may be married and unavailable, but I can look...hey, I enjoy great paintings and beautiful scenery too, but I don't plan to take them home. I just don't understand why my wife flips my ear whenever a hot babe walks by. Not my fault.

If you plan to come to Las Vegas, remember, it's a step up from almost anywhere else. And it's civilized...not the image you see in movies. We aren't just ON the crossroad of the world...we ARE the crossroad of the world.
Those all sound good with the exception of Wal-Mart, I hate Wal-Mart, always have always will

We have a lot of outdoor malls here that are built like old fashioned town centers. One I like going to is Waterford Lakes Town Center in eastern Orlando. It's got all the stores I love without too many tourists.

I know Las Vegas is nothing like it is in the Hangover (which was very funny by the way)

I wish I had the money now so I could take a trip out there and make a decision for myself if Vegas would be a good move or not, but then again it's better to wait by this time next year the economy should be on the right track.

How about rent a cars? Do you have to be 21 to rent one in Vegas? Or will they let a 20 year old driver rent one? I dont want to take the bus around Vegas

UNLV is kind of a mystery to me. There are some businesses catering to it, but not nearly as much as you'd assume should be.

Additionally, not much around the campus as far as, for example, a huge college-like neighborhood area - with fraternities, sororities, students delivering pizza, and all the like...for whatever reason, with UNLV, it does seem students just 'vanish' shortly after their class is over.

Granted, maybe on the times I've been to Vegas, it has been always during the vacation times, I don't entirely remember. Does it seem quite lively when school is in session?

I can certainly see the many adult students going in the evening though, and picking up classes. For how large it is, it seems like more of a commuter college.

Usually I've been out in Vegas in the winter or summer...wonder if its just possible I've always missed the full-on semester if it is actually different than I've seen each time I've been around there.

It is a HOT, HOT, HOT damned desert. "Dry heat" is still hot. Florida summers are as miserable as well, but I used to be able to say that the water sports and activities made up for it. Now you got things that will eat you everywhere. Go to San Francisco; cool all year, mild winters, great food and stunningly beautiful.

Ahh comeon. It is hot in the summer. But livable, particularly if you can stay a little wet. Note that Phoenix is both hotter and wetter...so if Vegas is HOT,HOT,Hot...what is Phoenix? And they still live there reasonably comfortably.

I find SF cold and clammy much of the year. Food is much the same as Las Vegas...which is a good bit better than most places. It is however in no way stunningly beautiful. In a few places it rises to picturesque. But it does not hold a candle to the strip (for gaudy) or the surrounding mountains for enviornment.

In those FBI tables however LV is a long way from the bottom. Better than the entire rust belt...and places like Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia.

Crime in Las Vegas is best described as too high to advertise too low to spend a lot fixing..

Note that Henderson crime is low enough to be advertised.
Yes the FBI does publish crime rankings. Just do a search on FBI crime index and you will find it all over the internet including fbi.gov

No They Don't

From the 2008 FBI site...

"Caution Agaist Ranking

Each year when Crime in the United States is published, many entities—news media, tourism agencies, and other groups with an interest in crime in our Nation—use reported figures to compile rankings of cities and counties. These rankings, however, are merely a quick choice made by the data user; they provide no insight into the many variables that mold the crime in a particular town, city, county, state, region, or other jurisdiction. Consequently, these rankings lead to simplistic and/or incomplete analyses that often create misleading perceptions adversely affecting cities and counties, along with their residents."

And Las Vegas will still rank well away from the bottom if the tables published by the FBI are used to create a ranking.

i didnt necessarily mean it will be completely turned around in one year, but i do believe we will be recovering by this time next year. and yes i am very well aware that vegas has been hit especially hard (number one in foreclosures and 13.5% unemployment right?) orlando is not much better

its VERY hard to get a job anywhere but all I can do is try right?

but there are always places who are hiring wherever you go, they may not be the high paying jobs everybody desires, but the openings are there,

i think with my retail and grocery store experience finding a job may not be as difficult as it seems. i could be wrong though

If you are motivated to work you will always find somebody that needs your services. Besides, what's the difference being unemployed in Las Vegas or unemployed someplace else? You still need to find a job. So why not live someplace you like and look for one there? I know, people will say if unemployment is that high you'd have a better chance some were it is lower. Not necessarily so. It depends on your line of work or what other work you are willing to do...and how clever you are at selling yourself. Most of the unemployment in Las Vegas has to do with new construction...materials, labor, even furniture sales. Everyone here is still buying groceries. Another thing that is booming right now is any kind of repair. Instead of buying new, people are repairing their old things. My computer guy is busy as a _____(fill in your own cliché).
