Hey:

I'm thinking of moving sometime this year. I'm from up north, so weather is a factor. Mostly, I'm looking at either Las Vegas or Los Angeles. I own my own business, so a state's business climate is important, but not the sole factor. My question for people in Nevada, and those who know California, is whether the business climate in NV is so much better than CA that it's worth locating in NV. I know NV has no income/corporate taxes, and the property taxes are low. I hear horror stories about not only CA taxes but also lots of regulations. Any insights that people have would be great. I'm cross posting this also in the Los Angeles forum.

Thanks!

I live in neither state, but my answer would be Yes. California has been brought to its knees by the left: high taxes, progressive taxes, restrictive energy and labor laws, powerful public sector unions, ....

It doesn't seem to be improving much in California. Rumor has it that unelected bureaucrats (labor, environment, etc) wield a lot of power in California and have supported policies that make it a bad place to do Business. I would recommend NV over CA.

I have also heard that California's regulations can be just as detrimental to conducting business as its high taxes.

We own our own business, here in Vegas. Depending on what type of business you are in, CA can be a nightmare Laws. In our industry, it is crazy with the laws, compared to Vegas. Do not know the difference with taxes, as we have not had a business in CA.

The business is Internet, e-commerce related. I don't know if LV has a great tech community, such as the Bay Area, Seattle or Austin. None of those areas appeal to me. I've been to both cities. LV reminds me of Orange County, but without the ocean.

Why would you care?

Great tech communities deal with ventures. Not with going businesses. If I had a going business making money I certainly would prefer Las Vegas.

If I had a hot and saliable idea...I would go to Silicon Valley.

Are you conning or selling?

Very insightful Cap!

The downside of CA is that they are always picking your pocket, and probing your anus.

The upside is that it has a beautiful climate, and is the best place to live in the US, as long as you have some $$ - and are willing to put up with bureaucratic nuisances and high taxes.

.

Not so. If you want a climate first Hawaii is probably better. CA has lots of climates some not so hot. On a climate basis I would not live in San Fran on a bet. The penisula though is much better.

Much of Southern CA near ocean is not particularly nice. Grey, damp and often cool. No place near the sunlight of LV.

The inland empire approaches the heat of LV and is much more humid.

I would think there are a narrow band of places somewhat inland in CA that is quite nice...but no lots of CA is worse than LV...and in someplaces by a lot.

Hawaii? Who the hell wants to live on an isolated island in the pacific? After a while it gets pretty dull, unless you smoke alot of pot, and have a harem of nubile girls to keep you occupied.

By CA, I meant the *nice* parts that are on/near the water, and where it's *warm*. Even, SF does have its charm, and the weather is better there than 90% of the US. Sure beats living in detroit, buffalo, or portland (the poor man's SF).

i.e. if you're making $250k+ and are willing to pay the $3,000 monthly sunshine tax premium and deal with nanny state issues, it's a decent place to live. Considering you only live once, it might be worthwhile to pay extra.

I lived in "nice" California for 18 years all together. I prefer Las Vegas. Much more sun which I like. Be nice if the temp stopped at 100 or so but we can live with that.

Note that the coastal CA is really nice only in the fall. And a little nicer than Vegas in the winter. It is foggy and chilly in the spring and never gets past hazy sun until September.
