I am moving to Vegas in a month, and I am not really nervous about anything.

But lately I have been thinking about our four year old playing outside, and the threat of the bugs and insects that she doesn't know about?

We are coming from Minnesota and have been living in an apartment. So we are really excited to enjoy our own backyard and many days of sunshine.

Do those with kids let them play outside unattended? (In there own backyard?)

Thanks

Yes, it is safe. But you do need to keep an eye out. But also teach your children not to play with the bugs. My daughter screams every time that she sees them and runs for an adult to kill it or if all else fails runs and gets a big shoe to stomp on it. Bug Bully coming out in her, lol!

Scorpions, no. But there can be black widows in dark places, especially around older homes. Normal precaution is fine. Spiders try their best to avoid you, so teach the baby not to put fingers in cracks. It's probably way worse where you come from than it is here. Humid climates have many times more critters of all kinds than we have in the desert. Your state bird is the mosquito, which I'd worry about more than spiders. You'll see almost none of those here, and no fleas either. Back yards are usually pretty safe unless there's a pool. More of our kids are in danger of drowning in the backyard pool than anything else.

Kid is very unlikely to find a black widow. Note they exist in at least as much quantity in the midwest as in the desert.

Scorpions are a localized problem and reasonably rare. You will however find scorpions indoors more commonly than outside. They are out there if present but you won't normally come across them. If you should get unlucky and find a scorpion hire bugbully or similar and get them under control and the home well sealed. Again though very unlikely... In perhaps a thousand homes that I know well I have seen three with scorpions.

Scorpions are here. I have tons of customers that have them. Just because you may have not seen them at your property does not mean they are not here. Plus all over town, just use to be a few isolated areas, but not anymore.

Others have said that black widows aren't that common. I guess that it depends on what part of the city you're in, 'cuz during the warmer months, they're everywhere at our place. We park the car on the street or in the driveway at night, and by morning, the entire underside is webbed from the undercarriage to the ground. They also take up residence in just about any corner of the garage and/or outside the house. We don't see them in the house, though.

Just teach your daughter what the dangerous bugs look like, and to stay away from dark places and spider webs. As long as you're doing a good job of supervising, there really shouldn't be any concern anyway.

now worries, there are plenty of other things to worry about! The honey bees are coming out to play, I would be more careful of those. Two weeks ago my son decided to eat one, got a nice sting
on his finger and a mouthful of yucky!

I see black widows, but it's the brown spiders I see the most. Never spotted a scorpion.

I would agree they are common...but kids don't generally come across them...they pretty much stay out of sight in daylight. Now bigger kids that poke into holes and crannies...different story. We grew up in Louisville KY. They were very common there. Used to collect them to terrorize girls.
