We have a regular stream of Canadian visitors as DW is a dual US/Canada citizen with family there. Nobody has a visa. So you should not need one either.
The organization that is always up on all these rules is the airline. Get them to confirm. They have to take you back where you came from if the US won't let you in...they don't like to do that.
I'm a Canadian Citizen. I will change the plane in Houston, Texas and my layover time is 20 hours.
I don't think there exists a visa for Canadians for short periods. You can get home from Istanbul to Edmonton in as little as 16 hours. Why would you take a 20 hour layover in Houston?

Actually honestly it was the one of the cheapest tickets I could find

Don't apologize. We annually fly from Las Vegas to Puerto Villarta. I do not beleive we have ever taken the direct flight of which there are several. We take another airline to Phoenix or LA and then catch a plane to PV. Saves couple of hundred dollars eqach for a 4 or 6 hour layover. DW goes shopping in Phoenix...loves it.
