Rossinet, We would love to help you! Please take a bit of time look at this //www.city-data.com/forum/lehig...residents.html It really helps if you give us more information. Also, the search feature on this site works really well if you are interested in a particular town.

East Penn, Parkland, Southern Lehigh, and Salisbury are all highly rated.

Here's a quick comparison of some of the area High Schools - Schooldigger.com comparison results

However, from what every HS student and parent has told me, the kids do not take the tests all that seriously. Nothing is tied to grades and there are no rewards for doing well. They know that state funding is tied to doing well on these tests and according to my kids, they aren't hard, the tests are tedious and time consuming. I would not use them as the major factor in choosing a school district, but rather as a way to weed out perhaps the worst districts.

Preschool is PA is not required, so all of the preschool programs are private (about $100-150/month depending on how many days & hours).

Allentown is a big town with good areas and not so good areas. Also, the surrounding towns are not very far, so if you're going to be working in Allentown, you can feel OK looking at the surrounding areas - provided you have a car.

Rossinet,
We are also moving from Florida, the Tampa Bay area ( Lutz). Allentown would be my most Northern consideration but I am looking forward to any advice anyone gives you , or if you wish to share your findings.

Please listen to what KristyLiz is saying. Allentown's schools are just not very safe right now and it's an easy commute from any of the outlying towns as long as you have a car.
