My husband and I and our three small children are considering relocating to Lexington due my husband's job. I was wondering about the public elementary schools in the area. Is there an area that has better schools than others that we should consider? Is there any area we should avoid? THANKS!!

There are some old posts that detail many of the schools. I'll try to give you a synopsis. Fayette County Public Schools received Blue Ribbon status in 2006. However, there are definitely some schools that are much better than others.

Elementary:
Rosa Parks
Veterans Park
Glendover
Cassidy
Middle:
Morton is by far the best.
High School:
Dunbar
Henry Clay

If you concentrate on neighborhoods in these school districts you can't go wrong.

There are several good private school options as well.
Sayre (K-12)
Lexington Christian Academy (K-12)
The Lexington School (K-8)

Fayette County also has several magnet programs.
www.fcps.net is the school website and has a vast amount of information.

Let's not forget the magnet program schools.

Maxwell Elementary is a Spanish Immersion program that serves the entire county. Acceptance is by lottery, but living within 1 mile will get preferential treatment. New students will not be accepted after first grade unless they can show proficiency in Spanish, therefore class sizes do decline due to attrition Their CATS scores have kept them in the top ten elementary schools in the state. My two youngest sons attended there and now attend Morton Middle, each maintaining a GPA above 3.65.

SCAPA is the creative and performing arts program, also serving all the county. Acceptance is by talent and demonstrated skills.

Both of these schools show high statewide scores

Lexington also has a couple good private schools I did not see mentioned. I think Lexington Catholic is high quality and Sayre is good for a K-12 college prep school.

In addition to Maxwell and SCAPA there is a gifted program that has admissions criteria. In addition Dixie Elementary has a magnet of some sort but I am not familiar with what it is. There are probably other magnets as well and they are all outlined on the school system's website There is a dropdown menu and magnets is a selection option.
