Are these really seperate cities?? I mean this is central London after all with the tall skyscrapers you would think would be in London's downtown area.
Alot of it is historical, dating back to 1066 and the Norman invasion. William the Conquerer decided to bypass the City Of London after beating Harold in the Battle of hastings, deciding the opposition there was overly vociferous and challenging. He holed his army outside of London and negotiated with the Londoners instead. The City Of London was then handed self-Government by the new KIng as a token of respect for acknowledging William the Conquerer's term of rule peacefully.
The City of London still has a seperte police force today, the city of London police as opposed to London's Met. Apparently there is alot of rivalry, annoyance and distrust between the two The boundaries are marked by momuments at various places such as Chancery Lane station.
