Revitalised Oxford Street now boasts the world's greatest range of “affordable” fashion stores, according to a global poll.

Europe's busiest high street easily beat off competition from New York's Fifth Avenue, the Champs-Elysées in Paris, Milan's Via Torino and Tokyo's Omotesando.

Oxford Street won on attributes such as number of brands, affordability, “translating catwalk to shop floor”, and designer collaborations.

Congratulations to London, now we're waiting for NYC to strike back.

I'm left underwhelmed as I always have been about Oxford Street. I avoid it.

It looks photo shoped to me, but if it's not, it was most likely the January sales.

I've been on that street in May, but I did not like it. It was so overcrowded and you can't walk straight on to the next underground station. However the stores over there are quite good.

Oxford Street might have all the shops but it has all the personality of a paper cup! I prefer going down the side streets and exploring those areas.

Hear, hear !

Also I find most of the shops really tacky and the whole street always looks shabby and down at heel to me somehow.

I prefer to leave Oxford Street to the tourists and out-of-towners. Besides, there's hardly anything to be found there that can't be found on most British high streets.

Just look at how crowded it is in that photo, which matches my experience of Oxford St - is that really your idea of a fun way to spend your time? Not mine. I'm a man of simple tastes I suppose (from Yorkshire, nuff said) but there's nothing I'd want to buy that I'd actually need to go there for as opposed to anywhere else.

Neither 5th Avenue nor the Champs Elysees are major shopping streets IMHO. Madison Av. is far better than 5th Av. and the Rue Faubourg St. Honore is far better than the Champs Elysees. Both are better than Oxford St.
