Some people think that just because they are abroad in the other end of the earth their comments won't be heard at home. Cleese told a television station in Australia that London is not an English city. Do you agree or disagree with this and what do you think will happen in the future. Thank you. So John Cleese is now an official spokesman for this Country?

It's not a matter of debate.

London is an English city.

London is an English city.

NYC is also diverse, yet you'd never hear a NYer saying that NYC isn't an American city. What does John Cleese think of Sydney? That it isn't an Australian city? Large numbers of immigrants still appear to be a novelty to some Brits.

I don't understand you people. What he's saying is clearly that London isn't a particularly good example of an English city, probably because it's very diverse and cosmopolitan. And, yes, people say all the time that New York isn't particularly an American city.

You would also never hear Australians saying that Sydney wasn't an Australian city but most cities around the world are not representative of their country. Everything is different, lifestyle, culture plus transient population.

Given how the OP worded the statement it is no wonder that people replied in the way that they did.

Many a capital city is in the same situation where it is not a fair reflection on the rest of the Country, but many of our larger cities in England and the UK are diverse and cosmopolitan.

The comments by Cleese were made 3 years ago. They were a direct disparaging reference to the ethnic and cultural composition of the city.

His comments were widely derided and Londoners rightly snapped-back. As written in theEvening Standard at the time... Commuters across the capital today said that "the best thing about it is the diversity" and said they did not agree with Cleese's claims.

London, England, United Kingdom:
