Long Island has lots of excellent libraries - how do you define "best"??? What would it take for a library to fall into that category?

Default Public libraries

There are several different forms of public libraries -- the most prominent form is the school district library district, where the library district is coterminous with the school district; then there are association libraries, similar in governance to an independent incorporated fire company; municipal libraries, which are typically village libraries; and, special district libraries, governed by the town in which they were created.

And, just like the school district you use is determined by the school district to which you pay property tax, the library you use is determined by the library district to which you pay property tax. You can use the facilities of other libraries; but, you may not be allowed full access to the services these other libraries provide their residents.

We love the library here in Centereach (Middle Country)...but I don't see how you can possibly get an answer unless someone here has actually visited (on more than 1 occasion) all the libraries on Long Island.

Hey, don't give up the secret. Keep the crowds away!! I'm not a resident, but I love to use the reading room to catch up on periodicals.

The worst libraries I've seen are Smithtown's..instead of one big library they have like 3 tiny ones, which is probably why they are working on a new one in the old armory building. Also, King's Park's library is lame.
