my boyfriend and i are relocating to NY from Boston (we currently live in Boston in a neighborhood called Charlestown, which we love). my new job will be in Farmingdale and as much as we'd love to live in Brooklyn, I think the commute for me might be a bit unbearable. Is there a great beach town somewhere on LI which might work? I wish there was a website to compare towns in boston to ny area! Our budget is up to $3000 per month. We prefer to rent for the first year until we get to know the island well. Looking for a house or apartment, with parking, old/charming construction (but renovated!), nice town with restaurants, things to do, etc.. train access. we do not have kids so schools aren't critical at all. Thanks for any suggestions. We're in our mid 30's.

Default For those who may not be familiar with Babylon

You might want to give the Village of Babylon a look-see:

It is important to know that there are 3 "Babylons" (from smallest to largest, in order of acreage):

1. There is the Village of Babylon;

2. There is the "Babylon, NY 11702" ZIP Code postal zone, and it includes the Village of Babylon and parts of 2 adjacent hamlets within its service area; and,

3. There is the Town of Babylon, and it includes 3 villages and 12 hamlets as well as the "Babylon, NY 11702" ZIP Code postal zone and 9 other ZIP Code postal zones, within its borders.

For those who may not be familiar with Babylon:

Babylon is a village (incorporated in 1893) in the southeast part of the Town of Babylon, in the southwest part of Suffolk County (along the Babylon/Islip town line).

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Babylon in the Town of Babylon is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of North Babylon; on the east by the Hamlet of West Islip in the Town of Islip (the Babylon/Islip town line); on the south by the Great South Bay; and, on the west by the Hamlet of West Babylon.

The Village of Babylon has a different border than does the "Babylon, NY 11702" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Babylon, NY 11702" mailing address and not be in the Village of Babylon and a place can have other than a "Babylon, NY 11702" mailing address and be in the Village of Babylon). Those places that have a "Babylon, NY 11702" mailing address that are not in the Village of Babylon are in the Hamlet of North Babylon and in the Hamlet of West Babylon; and, at the same time, there are places in the Village of Babylon with a "West Babylon, NY 11704" mailing address.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): Excellent Long Island Geographic Resource

I agree - I would try Babylon. Close second would be Huntington but the beaches would not be ocean beaches - they'd be on the Long Island Sound.

Good luck!

Default In case you are unfamiliar with the local geography

mimosaesque, in case you are unfamiliar with the local geography, I've sent you an explanation of the very, very confusing geography of "Lawn Guyland" as a DM (Direct Message).

I agree with Babylon Village and the Ocean side of Long Island (South Shore); on the Long Island Sound side (North Shore), downtown Huntington seems to fit your bill as would Northport Village (most like New England of the three), but Northport is a bit further from the LIRR.
All three would be worth exploring on a weekend trip

Just nothing at all like Boston and definitely not all beach towns!

Are you referring to all places that have a "Farmingdale, NY 11735" mailing address that includes the Village of Farmingdale, the Hamlet of South Farmingdale and parts of the Hamlet of Plainedge and the Hamlet of Old Bethpage in the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County and the Hamlet of East Farmingdale in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County?
