I've heard of Biltmore Shores, Harbor Green, Old Harbor Green, Nassau Shores, Bar Harbor, etc. Where did these names come from, and what is the classification of these places? Are they just place names that have no real meaning and no defined boundaries?

All of these neighborhoods are affluent and very pretty, by the Great South Bay. I was just wondering what the story was.

If memory serves me correctly, those names were given by the builders.

The builders made up those names? When did those neighborhoods get built? What were those areas called before the neighborhoods?

A builder buys a large tract, plans a subdivision with an appealing name to sell homes.

Not sure of when those homes were built; my Jr HS BFF moved to Bar Harbor in the late 70's and those homes had been there a while already. My neighborhood in North Mass was built in the early 1960's...so I would estimate Bar Harbor must have been built at some point in the 60's.

Before the neighborhoods were built, they were larger tracts of privately owned land. You would have to check with the local historical society for more info.

Pretty much all of Massapequa (and before Walter chimes in I'm talking about the entire area not just the hamlet) was developed by the late 50's and early 60's. Many of the homes down there have been renovated or rebuilt, but as you said it was pretty much developed by the 60's.

Really? All the way down as it is today with all the 'water' streets?

How about Old Harbor Green? Those seem to be a little older, with a nicest layout of all areas in my opinion. I live just north of Merrick and my house was built in 1960. I have always been curious about these areas but it is funny how when someone says where they are from they state the area of Massapequa/Massapequa Park too.

Forgetting, of course, that they may be in East Massapequa ("Massapequa, NY 11758" mailing address).
