Moved to Merrick last month, and while I am enjoying a shorter commute, parking is a nightmare. I usually take 8:16am to Penn. Would love to hear from people taking the same train where they find parking.
You're right on the borderline of the time you'd be able to get a spot. Merrick does have a lot of parking with the furthest lot that runs the length of Brooklyn/Bedford Ave being the last to fill up. I usually take a 7:55 and the lot is nearly full at that time.
I just love living in Massapequa Park and being able to take an 830 train and still find plenty of parking!!!
Ok...that was not meant to twist the bayonet but don't expect parking along the Babylon line unless you get an earlier train.
Keep in mind that parking along the Babylon line was developed in the Ozzie and Hariet days of the wife staying at home and dropping off/picking up hubby at the train station.

And the police booth presence is there to guard all the Ferrari's and Bentleys
I think most of the Park is walkable to the station which may also contribute to the abundance of parking.
The Park extends to the Southern State Pkwy..about 1.75 miles...walkable I suppose but I would think most people drive.
I haven't seen any Bentleys or Ferrraris...but I haven't seen any Suffolk Cty Style beaters either.
I was kidding with the bentleys. That's true and south of merrick is a hike. I would say though that west of Philadelphia, north of merrick rd, east of lake shore and south of jerusalem is btwn a 1 to 10 minute walk. That's a pretty good chunk of the village.
I suspect not too many people walk. Although, I have noticed most of the walkers seem to cross south over Sunrise at Park Blvd. One side of Park Blvd, south of Sunrise, is Massapequa and I think those people find it easier to walk to the Mass Pk station rather than attempt to find a spot down in Masspequa.
