Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy won't seek re-election in November and will turn over his entire $4-million campaign war chest to the district attorney's office.

The 51-year-old county executive, who has been in elected office his entire adult life, made the stunning announcement following a district attorney's investigation.

"Questions have been raised concerning fund-raising through my political campaign," Levy said in his statement. "Since this occurred under my watch, I accept responsibility. "

"In order to resolve these questions, I will be turning over my campaign funds to the Suffolk County district attorney," the statement said.

Minutes after Levy's statement was released, District Attorney Thomas Spota issued his own, saying, "There is no question that while the investigation revealed serious issues with regard to fundraising and the manner in which it was conducted, including the use of public resources, I am confident that Mr. Levy did not personally profit. The forfeiture of his $4 million campaign fund demonstrates his acceptance of responsibility for these failings."

He said his investigation "into Mr. Levy's conduct" had ended with the announcement. He said the funds would be distributed to those who wanted it back, but only after the November election. The remaining will be donated to charity.

That was my first thought. I can guarantee you that the PBA made some sort of deal with Spota to get rid of Levy because he tried to derail their gravy train. The PBA is desperate for Bellone to be the next county executive because he would basically be a puppet like Gaffney and Halpin and give them whatever they want.

As someone who has been very critical of the PBA, I somehow doubt that this was some quid pro quo between Spota & the PBA. You just don't turn over $4 million in campaign funds unless some serious misconduct took place, that just doesn't happen.

Maybe so, but if that was the case then why dident Spota demand he resign? He also could have indicted Levy if something serious occurred.

Steve Levy was a good guy. He is the only one in Long Island politics who has the balls to stand up to the PBA and the public sector unions and say no more, he is the only one brave enough to speak out against illegal immigration, most of all he was not Long Island politics as usual.

Who stands to win:

- the SCPD and the PBA
- Public Sector unions
- the good ol boy/politics as usual crowd
- the illegal immigrants and their advocates

Who stands to lose:

- the taxpayers

It was because of Steve Levy that Suffolk County is not a total mess like Nassau ... now we will be just like them in a few years when Bellone comes along and bends over for the unions.

Not as criminal as the public sector unions. They are outright thieves.

That must have been some itch, for you to make such a reach.

Maybe it was a reach, but it's pretty obvious that the PBA is desperate for another puppet in the county executive's office. They are scared, Levy threatened their gravy train. Now they took him down.

Pretty plausible.
