Town of North Hempstead House Remodel Permit (Manhasset: countertops, appliances)

I am currently purchasing a house in Manhasset. We are planning to remodel the kitchen and bathrooms. Works include change kitchen cabinets, make a new island in kitchen, change floor tiles for both kitchen and bath. Change wall and floor tiles and install new sink and bathtub in the bathrooms. For the basement, it's finished, but we will update the wall (wood to cement) and the floor (concrete to tile). Will I need permits to do these works? If we are taking a wall down in the kitchen to make it open kitchen, does that require permit too? Thank you in advance!

Kb for the very first time I must respectfully disagree with your answer. I remodeled my kitchen and bath and the kitchen needed the permits because I was adding a new electrical service. Simple remodeling does not need a permit. Now changing a wall should be done via permit, that said, from the many I know who have done so, rarely do they obtain a permit.

IF, the basement was previously done with a permit why would she need a new one? Again, along the lines of cosmetic changes. If the changes are more than cosmetic then I will agree with you once again.

I talked with Andy at Buildings Department at the Town of North Hempstead about this very issue. Doing a purely cosmetic update like new countertops, cabinets or backsplash does not require any permits. However, if you are touching any plumbing or gas lines, you have to get a plumbing and/or electric permit. And this INCLUDES putting in new (gas) appliances, even if they are going in the exact same location. Ugh. Total pain and sort of ridiculous!

I remember when I changed my gas stove in the exact same location, I had to put in a turn off valve right behind the gas stove where there previously was none.
