Strike one!

What type of ammunition? Were they using hunting ammo? or some high powered specialty bullets?

Strike two!

Everyone knows that using a .22 for close and upfront "hunting" is not the most efficient way of dispatching your prey. Add to that it is illegal to use a rifle in Suffolk county - you may use a blackpowder (one shot) implement, shotgun, bow and arrow or cross-bow (if medically handicapped).

Strike three!!
The above is wrong. No hunting license is required on LI to have a shot gun or rifle in your home and use it for self defense if necessary.

That was in reference to the OP who stated you could have a .22 for hunting use. It is illegal to use a rifle as a hunting implement in Suffolk County. Check the regs.

I believe you are refering to this:

Dog survives, one robber shot dead in Long Island home gun battle

Thankfully the dog survived and will hopefully be back to full health in no time. But I've driven through East Islip and it never seemed bad enough to warrant this type of incident. Anybody think otherwise?

As soon as the perp brought the gun out to commit a few felonies, he's no longer considered a "gun owner" in my eyes - And probably barred from being a legal gun owner from that point on. Yeah, he was 'literally in possession of a gun' , but I view it the same way Silverbulletz views it= the real "gun owner" here was the resident.
I could go steal a Ferrari tonight, that wouldn't make me a ferrari owner.

I don't get your logic.

You say you aren't a Ferrari owner if you steal it, but if you buy it you are? If the guys bought their guns, they are "gun owners" .. what their intent is is irrelevant.

If SCPD caught them outside the resident's property with loaded .22 rifles, arrested them and sent off to prison, are they still gun owners?
Gun owner= resident that legally owns a firearm

did these guys even have a right to own these guns? There were some felony warrants outstanding. Can the 2 survivors legally purchase guns and become gun owners after this incident?

No, they were gun wielding perps. ie Bad Guys.

1 use of self defense down, 1,499,999 yet to be reported on.

No idea if they could own a gun, but the survivors will not be able to legally purchse a firearm after this incident, they will have a felony record.
