I live 6 houses away from a bus stop. There is a bus stop in front of the building where I work. Its a total of 9 miles from point to point. If I take the bus its 3 connections and over an hour to get to work. Its longer to get home.
No thanks, I'll drive my gas guzzling car and shave 2.5 hours off my work day.
Basically, there is nothing that can be done. Long Island is so spread out that buses will always have low ridership and low frequency, so basically the only people who will use it are the people who have no other options (seniors, students, people who can't afford a car, etc)

based on this map http://mta.info/libus/mapnassaubus.pdf (broken link) I took LIB several times and never had to do that give more details
i think that buses could work on long island. Heres how:
Shrink the buses to fit anywhere from 2-7 seats. Let individuals taking the bus drive it themselves. They would also be responsible for fueling the bus. Since each individual would drive his bus he could control the radio and temperature too. Additionally i think it would help if each individual could use the bus to quickly and directly go from his house to his job and back with no waiting. To accomplish this buses would have to be kept in front of each individuals house in an area i'm going to call a "driveway". At each place of business an area could be set aside for the buses to be ready to transport the workers home. I'll call that a "parking lot".
I think if you could meet these conditions buses would be wildly successful here on long island.
I really should never joke online because it clearly does not come through...Once again I was jokingly saying buses would work ---if we turned them into cars (keep it in driveway, go directly to job, fuel it yourself--all of these things describe our cars). I don't think buses will ever work on LI.

On Long Island (and certainly here in California) I would say that at least 75% of the riders are disabled people or students . They usually have vouchers and do not pay a regular (or any) fare. That's why our system here has run out of money & it probably the same there also.
I guess that transsportation is just a public service, the way schools and libraries are.

Im in Suffolk County, busses arent as frequent or timely as Nassau (at least when I looked into them)
Still rather drive myself, I can be at work in 15 min, 20 if I stop for breakfast.
actually buses alone in LI wont work but if improved at rush hour and coordinated with the LIRR they can be more effective many nassau buses have TIMED LINKS WITH LIRR TRAINS!!!!!!!! Suffolk is a disaster I agree!!!!! I have used their buses if you time them right you can use them for just about anything!!!!! but If u mess up UR SCREWED BIG-TIME
