We just bought our first home in Franklin Square. It is a small ranch 950 sq ft. Its me my husband and toddler. It has gas which i will use for heat, hot water and cooking but my dryer is electric until i can save up for a gas one.

So my question is this. How much do you think i will pay on average for gas? electricity? Water?

My husband works full time and i am a stay home mom. During the summer i will hang my clothes out to dry and be outside when its nice enjoying having a yard. The house has steam heat!

Any guesstimate would be great because im going over our budget.

Thanks

I'm in FS in a small cape. me wife and 2 kids 10 and 13. On annual balanced billing with LIPA and Keyspan varies from $170 to 250/month (they vary it to try to have no balance on last month of the year) LIPA varies from $99 to 125/month

Have gas heat (old furnace) gas stove gas hot water. Dryer was just switched from electric to gas.

Water is West Hempstead bills are about $40, but I don't have sprinklers, and only have 1 bathroom.

A lot depends on how efficient your boiler is, what temperature you keep your house, how much hot water you use (do you wash your clothes in hot/warm or cold water?), and also how good the insulation (including windows) is...

Why would you buy a house without knowing how much utils will cost? All is great if you can afford the house but what good is it if you can't afford the utils? Just saying. Who signs a contract or whatever for a home without knowing how much each bit costs?

I can't stress to you enough the importance of insulation. My home is much bigger, 2,500-3,000 sq ft., and my annual gas bill in Baldwin is $1,461 and that's for heat, HW, cooking & drying clothes. We also have a new 95% high efficiency gas boiler.

Since you just bought this house, you are going to make improvements over time. Consider energy when making those improvements. The first thing I did was add extra bats of insulation in the attic. That caused a tremendous drop in usage. Every time we re-did a room, we pulled the sheetrock down and tightened any gaps and added a layer of Celetex over the joists after replacing the builder's insulation. Expanding foam is your friend.

Thank you to all of you for your input. For the ones who were rude I was just wondering because i allowed for 1000 extra a month in my budget for the utilities but now that we are close to closing i wanted something more on. I did research before hand.

So its safe to say like 500 thanks everyone.

With your size house, even with less than efficient insulation/old windows and an old boiler you should be just fine with $500!
Much happiness in your new home! :-)

Elke, can't the OP request utility bills from the seller?
