I've decided to expand my search for a home out to Long Island since I feel I can get a bigger place for the same price (in the city).
I would prefer to spend in the 500s - maybe max 600.
2 things would be:
1. should be within 90s to the city (I work downtown)
2. preferably near a Chinese supermarket (my mom does the cooking/ grocery shopping and for her this is a MUST)
There's an H-Mart, I think it's called, in Williston Park...in fact the whole shopping center is geared toward the Asian population...would probably fit your other criteria too.

There is "Oriental Groceries" -- a store in Stony Brook which serves the Asian community both off and on campus. If you look further west -- Smithtown -- you would have good schools, but be about 20 mins +/- from this store at the intersection of 347 & Stony Brook Rd. Moving closer to Stony Brook would place you outside of the 90 min commute.
Sorry - 90 minutes to the city. School should be good - but I guess with my budget it's not going to be the GREATEST or anthing...
Did you mean 90 mins door to door ? If yes, then even Smithtown would be really pushing it.... I would stay with Syosset, Plainview wherabouts.... as far as commute is concerned. Schools are nice too.
There is a H & Y Marketplace in Hicksville, check that out first and ask around.

This.
Plus you wouldn't be too far from Flushing if there's a particularly hard to find item.
was about to say Plainview/OB also. There's that Korean market they were mentioning, and I ran across another smaller one down Woodbury Rd. by the Hicksville train tracks. The one we used to frequent down near Cantiague Park apparently closed.
You can find a large ranch or small colonial for that price. Schools are good, and you're 45 minutes away from Penn Station / NYC.
