I feel your pain. I spent most of my 20's on LI and I was so lonely. Most of the people I became friends with were in their 50's. Not that there is anything wrong with that. But occasionally, I wanted to be with someone from my own generation who was at the same stage of life that I was. I went to a lot of retirement parties and graduation parties for my friends' kids which was nice but at 24, I was out of place.

Unfortunately, demographics are against you. According to the 2010 census, the median age on Long Island is 40. This is not a place that young people flock to.

take a look at this age distribution. A HUGE dip in the 20's.

You play softball? Try to latch onto a co-ed team. Quickest way to mix in with a dozen people of the same age, some of whom can quickly become friends. Town of Brookhaven has leagues, I believe. Ask around for info or contact the town for league information.

Golf? Go out as a single a few times -- chances are you'll be paired up with a few people your age at some point. Shoot the breeze for a few hours, talk about how you're new to the area. Mention that you're looking for an occasional playing partner or some info on other courses and some (not all) people will be willing to give you some contact info to meet up for future rounds.
