I guess my accountant is charging a $20 fee for the e-filing this year?
Here is what the gov't. website says tho...
A. The IRS does not charge a fee for electronic filing. Some Authorized IRS e-file Providers (EROs) charge a fee for providing this service to their clients while others may offer it free of charge. However, this fee cannot be based on any figure from the tax return. Fees vary depending upon the tax professional you choose and the specific services you request.
My cpa last year told me to do turbotax but not submit and then proved to me that $300 to him for for ours and our daughters was well worth it. We would've paid feds $4,500 and Andy Cuomo $503. He got it down to $3100 and $390. He signs it so his license is attached.
I can't say what you did in your turbotax or what he did in the filed return. However 1 of you is actually wrong, he didn't just do a "better job"
Most people who have regular jobs don't have much that you can actually do to their return. If you follow the bouncing ball in turbotax you should be putting the same return together they are.
Granted an accountant can do it in a lot less time and be confident that I didn't screw it up.....
if you're going to someone who actually uses turbotax to do your returns... find someone who does it professionally with real software. Not that the softwawre is Sooo much better but its like hiring the guys hanging outside of home depot to work on your house.
If you don't shop around, nothing stops them from raising their prices. It's the trusted-service-provider effect. Bank on it.
Shop around to save $25?
I pay $225, yes its high. $200 is the going rate. However, to save $25 is not worth it for me. Been using the same CPA for 8 years.
Well I've used him for over 15 years and never an audit. I'll keep doing so. You're correct about license what I meant is if we get audited he holds some responsibility since he prepared taxes.
Nonsense. If you get audited and are found to be owing the government it will be your butt in the sling, not his. Oh, and by the way, just wait for his new fee to represent you - he'll make up for all those light fees you got over the years.
It went from $125 then $150,then last year $200. I wouldn't trade in my CPA for anything plus we each have our Ira's with him. He's in East Islip. MY DH has been using him for about 15 years and me about 9 years before that I used my dad's accountant.
He's probably making a heck of a lot more than just $200. How much are the expense ratios for your IRA's?
The chance of being audited in the NY area is rare. The IRS has limited resources and they are going to use them to recover the most taxes during audits. They are not going to come after a couple earning $100,000 on Long Island when they have their pick of millionaires in NY.
The IRS is not looking to track an accountants income by signature. They are looking to find those preparers who repeatedly make "errors" or take deductions that are either wrong or simply stretch the envelope.
Ha! Don't you wish that was the truth! The IRS will come after anyone!
My previous LL of the illegal hellhole was being audited while I lived there. And she ain't no NY millionare. Living in the 1st floor of a dormered cape she paid $345k in 2008 for, renting out the 2nd floor just to make ends meet. She told me as a teacher and single parent she basically pays zero taxes from all the deductions. Tax deduction for the gas used to commute, cell phone, clothes, I'm serious folks... Serves her right to get audited IMO. She shared TMI with me about her personal life. She was wailing how she won't be able to get an inground sprinkler this year because the IRS is fining her $1900.
Now that I think about it, maybe I'll call the IRS to see if she was capturing the rent I was paying her as her income.... LOL
About $200. I could do it myself but our tax situation has changed so much from year to year it is just worth it to me to have someone do it.
