I had a company file my 2011/2012 property tax grievance in Nassau County and won. However, I moved at the end of 2010 due to unexpected circumstances. I didn't think I would move but that is life.
So, now they are sending me the invoice even though I don't own the property anymore and didn't get the benefit of the reduced property tax.
I understand that the fine print said I have to pay in the event that I sell or move out of the property. So, should I just:
1. Suck it up and pay the $700 or
2. Call and negotiate for a lower payment or
3. Ignore it and let it go to collection. Not sure if this would affect my credit score.
Maybe you're buyers are sympathetic? Remember though they don't owe you anything. Just bring it up and ask kindly.
My friend received a letter from the previous owners regarding the same thing. $500 blah blah blah... It was worded like a collection letter laced with legal mumbo jumbo. They just ignored it because it wasn't nicely worded.
Been thru this - it's your obligation, as you already mentioned. Just pay it. If I were the people who bought your house I would laugh if you asked me to chip in.
