So I just got the registration renewal for my car in the mail. The DMV wants to charge me $133.50 for 2 years

I checked the NYS DMV site and it says to renew registration on a car in my weight class, it is 53.50 for 2 years, plus Nassau has a 30$/2yr fee.

What the hell?

You missed the line below that:

Supplemental MCTD Fee: $50 for two years ($25 per year) - for original registrations and renewals.

MCTD = Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District, paid by NY residents in twelve counties

Whether you commute or not, you PAY!!!

Yeah I just realized that the fees to renew the registration (MCTD, Nassau County use tax) are more than the actual registration fees. 53.50 to the DMV, 50$ to the MTA for who knows what, and 30$ to Nassau County.

Who the hell allows this?

I called DMV on this years ago and and asked why I had to pay a county "use fee" when in fact the actual registration is a "use fee" .. the thorough explanation I received "it's just a fee, you have to pay it" .
I believe that fee is $20 for Suffolk, $30 for Nassau (upstate people pay this also, DMV told me Albany County pays $30). Years ago I transferred a title from Nassau to Suffolk and noted they still charged me $30 fee instead of the lower $20 fee at renewal time (when the car was now registered in Suffolk. I went the DMV and complained, they did give me a $10 refund. Their response: "something is wrong with the computer system, how did you figure this out?" I'm wonder if they ever fixed that problem.
Here is a press release from 2009 - read the section under :
Vehicle Registration, Driver’s Licenses and Learner’s Permits to Cost More which gives details of the $25/year MTA surcharge. As mentioned , twelve counties are punished (the five boroughs of NYC included) , and it extends all the way up to Dutchess County (Poughkeepsie) ...

MTA BAILOUT BILL INCLUDES JOB KILLING TAXES, MASSIVE NEW LOCAL MANDATES, PROPERTY TAX HIKES AND NO REFORM | New York State Senate

Suburbanites continue to feed the MTA pigs. It never ends.

AND they generously offer to send you new "gold" plates for "only" an extra $25
Anybody know someone who paid the $25 to get the new plates?

They are ugly, the state should refund $25 for drivers who get them
