Yeah I just realized that the fees to renew the registration (MCTD, Nassau County use tax) are more than the actual registration fees. 53.50 to the DMV, 50$ to the MTA for who knows what, and 30$ to Nassau County.

Who the hell allows this?
I called DMV on this years ago and and asked why I had to pay a county "use fee" when in fact the actual registration is a "use fee" .. the thorough explanation I received "it's just a fee, you have to pay it" .
I believe that fee is $20 for Suffolk, $30 for Nassau (upstate people pay this also, DMV told me Albany County pays $30). Years ago I transferred a title from Nassau to Suffolk and noted they still charged me $30 fee instead of the lower $20 fee at renewal time (when the car was now registered in Suffolk. I went the DMV and complained, they did give me a $10 refund. Their response: "something is wrong with the computer system, how did you figure this out?" I'm wonder if they ever fixed that problem.
Here is a press release from 2009 - read the section under :
Vehicle Registration, Driver’s Licenses and Learner’s Permits to Cost More which gives details of the $25/year MTA surcharge. As mentioned , twelve counties are punished (the five boroughs of NYC included) , and it extends all the way up to Dutchess County (Poughkeepsie) ...
This obviously applies to Suffolk as well... this month I spent nearly twice as much for my reg as I did two years ago Can't wait to see what BS money-grab they dream up next.
