I'm moving out of the city and into Nassau County, but I can't afford much. I've looked at houses in Freeport, Uniondale, Hempstead, and Roosevelt. I know that these are all pretty bad areas, but I can't really afford anywhere else. Any advice on which of these four towns I should move to, or which I should really avoid? Keep in mind that if there's nice parts of any of these areas, I probably won't be moving to that part. Also what are pros and cons of living in each of those towns? Thanks!

Freeport has more good parts than bad...and Uniondale isn't really that bad either. Hempstead is definitely the one to avoid.
Really better off staying in the city...

Freeport has gorgeous homes. My husband saw many houses there before he settled on the house he bought in Baldwin Harbor before he met me. If you look in south Freeport (closer to Nautical mile), be prepared to deal with flood insurance. That will drive your insurance costs through the roof, depending on the zone where the home is located.

If I were limited to these towns, I would rank them as follows (based on combo of general reputation, safety, school district, demographics/diversity, location):
1. Freeport
2. Uniondale
3. Roosevelt
4. Hempstead (worst- lots of NCPD activity).

You have to remember that even the towns considered "bad" on Long Island aren't even that bad by national standards: they're just not up to par with neighboring Long Island towns.. Also remember that the vast majority of the people in these towns are still everyday working people just like you and me but are just a little more likely to be on a limiting income. It's just the few bad apples that spoil the bunch.

And even the towns you listed have nice areas in them and you could actually get a house in those pockets for a big bargain. In Freeport, check out "Nautical Mile" and "Stearns Park". In Hempstead, check out "Cathedral Gardens".

As for safety in these areas, most of the victims of crime in these areas are either people who are involved with bad crowds or who display expensive electronics/items and end up getting robbed. As long as you use common-sense then you're very unlikely to be bothered by anybody. The only areas in these towns that I would altogether avoid are some of the more urban/grittier parts of Hempstead but then again, you will probably be fine even there if you use common-sense.

If you have kids: All of these areas have below-average public schools though Freeport schools and Uniondale schools are still a notch better than Roosevelt and Hempstead schools. If you have kids then you may prefer private schools which are an expense.

And you asked which towns you should move to. I suggest you drive around the areas to see if a given neighborhood appeals to you.

Freeport all the way. The electric is cheaper too! Uniondale isn't bad either.

Only the eastern-third of East Massapequa is in the Amityville Union Free School District; the western two-thirds of East Massapequa is in the Massapequa Union Free School District.

I'd rank it like this.

Livable to Worst:
1. Freeport - Close to the water/Nautical Mile, and Stearns Park as LIPerson mentioned.
2. Uniondale - near East Meadow
3. Hempstead - Most of it is bad. Cathedral Gardens is actually nice but very close to the worst area in Nassau (eg-Terrace Ave). Some blocks near South Hempstead could be ok.
4. Roosevelt - stay away.

I'd go with Freeport as well.
