Hard Times: Lost on Long Island - Trailer - YouTube

I know there's tough stuff here but does this strike you as sensationalism?

LI is a walk in the park compared to the Rust Belt.

Seems like a few of those people should have had mortgages paid off by then. I wonder if these were a case of over valueing their position/status and purchasing/upgrading their property at the height of the market. Sad cases nonetheless and I hope to catch this program.

Well, it's a trailer. Always sensationalized. I didn't see anything in that trailer that makes me think "that's gotta be Long Island", though. It could be anywhere.

I don't have HBO so I won't be seeing it.

Producers are probably local and looking for a cheap shoot.

This story is anywhere and old.

I can't afford premium channels so I don't have HBO. How I wish that I could see this. The producers should have interviewed me. I would fit right in. As the guy in the trailer said, if you are not unemployed, then you don't understand. Notice the ages of these people.

Dateline recently did a similar story and it was people in Colorado. What interested me most about that show (which I was admittedly only half watching) was the common theme of the people in question being renters, not owners, of houses, but the houses were filled with expensive toys; one family refused to give up its huge SUV and admitted it was one way they were saving face; one woman blamed everything on her husband and refused to look for a job herself.

I have HBO and will give it a look see. Not sure what new light they can shed on the situation that we don't already know either first hand or one degree removed.

To be truthful, everyone I know on LI that wants to work is working.
Are they working in their career of choice...no, but they are working.

I wish you well in your hunt. I was out for a while too.

They are most fortunate. How old were they when they lost their jobs? Did they have experience with recent technology? Are they healthy enough so that they could handle working in retail or security full time and stand on their feet 8 hours a day or able to do some lifting?
