Most people realize that this is the way these folks get paid. It will just make you cheap.
I used to think you were a good poster.
Calling someone "cheap" because they either: a) didn't know of the practice (and what first-time homebuyer would), or b) don't want to cough up yet more money after paying NY's exorbitant closing costs? It's not "cheap." It's rational. It's tough out there. I'd rather have the money than a stranger I will never see again.
How much is "very little"? Does it depend on the sale price of the home? I'm not being sarcastic, I'd really like to know more about this. Thank you Tom for enlightening us.
Unless the mailman or garbagemen do something that goes above and beyond their regular job, I wouldnt give them a dime. They are reasonably well compensated for their job and they are government employees who shouldnt be receiving tips to begin with (whether legal or not). I do tip the UPS driver when I have had years when he was making regular deliveries and done extras like wrapping the packages in plastic on rainy days.
No need to get nasty limaman. I'm just trying to educate people. Sometimes people don't realize how other people make their living. It bothered me to see people treating title closers (who I work with every day and work very hard for very little money) as money grubbers because they are expected to pay them and it's called a "tip". Would they feel any more comfortable if it was called a fee?
Money grubbers? Really?
What about bad realtors?
Would you care to share the names you call those professionals?
How about the closers who sell your personal information?
Do we need to go there?
Enough is enough.
