Due to global warming, all of the native squirrel populations have been eradicated and replaced with chimpanzees. Consequently, we are at an all-time shortage of bananas and "Hicksville" has been renamed "Chimpsville."

Besides that, not much.

15,000 fled Suffolk County during 2005-2010; in the same time period, 7,000 emigrated to Nassau County.

There are now condos everywhere, as far as the eye can see.

Trees now grow to be 250 feet; must be global warming.

The Asian Tiger mosquito feasts all day long from spring through early fall.

The LIRR has prohibited drinking alcohol on its trains during certain hours (I think it's midnight through 5am on weekends?).

We in the Town of Hempstead got new recycling bins. I kid you not when I say they are off the hook.

Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!

There's definitely more traffic and it's not just Nassau any more... Suffolk is just as congested.

More strip malls have been built, to accommodate empty storefronts, which is probably the starkest difference from 2006. Prior to a couple of years ago, I can't remember an empty storefront staying unoccupied for any length of time. Today, a drive on any of LI's wonderful main thorough fares bears witness to the high number of empty storefronts, many of which have been empty for months, if not years.

In Smithtown, the local politicians passed a new ordinance that requires landlords to cover the windows of such empty storefronts. One landlord has taped paper with a litho of a store, in the front window of his empty storefront.

Neat... not.

It now takes a minimum of 2.5 hours to go from the exit portion of the Midtown Tunnel to Exit 49 on the LIE on any given weekend - for no particular reason at all. I stopped counting after that exit.
