Sure there are a lot of very nice middle class communities in Nassau County but not fitting your criteria in that price range. If you are looking for "little interaction/visibility" with neighbors at that price range, Nassau County is not the place. Probably not even out East. I actually like towns where there is a strong sense of community. From how you describe what you are looking for you may considering targeting places such as Upstate New York or Pennsylvania.
I am with ILLB on this....even if you're from Queens and only went to Hofstra, you can't be so unfamiliar with the place. A simple check of the MLS should be within the brain space of a Hofstra grad and will tell you all you need to know. Give me a break.

Sorry have to disagree. Many college students I know can barely manage to get to school let alone know geography and costs of homes in the area. I am willing to give OP the benefit of the doubt on this one, especially since we know little else about her.
I am not familiar with Long Island.... and unfortunately unlike many of you probably, I don't have a lot of time and money where I can burn gas, drive around and randomly explore different areas. This is also not a common criteria so it's extremely difficult to find pre-existing discussion boards or chatrooms on this topic.
Believe it or not, i'm not a realtor, Long Island homeowner or even an LI resident so i'm not familiar with real estate sale prices or any of this stuff. Checking real estate website would likely be the next step but real estate websites only give picture of certain angles of a property but i'm curious about the whole neighborhood personality characteristics. I'm looking for suggestions of areas by people who are familiar with various areas there. I do appreciate the feedback that has been given so far.
Since some of you guys are taking it upon yourselves to 'read me', here is some more information about me. I'm in my early 30's, married, pregnant, work full-time and attend [graduate school] part-time.

You should look at realty web sites, even though you get a "restrictive angle" on the photos . Your proposed price point is low and the sites can show you what is out there in your price range, google maps streetview feature can show you what standing on the street looks like. This is just a start, once you can narrow down locations then you can get specific with the "whole neighborhood personality".

A college student looking for a $400K house? I never saw this person as a student.
I stand by my original statement, even in light of her update. The MLS may give "restrictive angles" but the property dimensions are on the listings.
How can someone be in the RE market and be so unfamiliar with their target future home?
I'm not quite "on the market" yet. As stated previously, now we decided our budget and are just in the process of getting suggestions and THEN we will explore the suggested area. I was also gonna ask this same question for Westchester and New Jersey but haven't got around to it. My husband is the breadwinner between us and even with that being said, my FT jobs pays me well and also pays for most of my schooling. If anything, we planned on buying within the next 2-3 years.
Ok, fine, now I understand that my budget is low relative to what i'm looking for. Cool, that's really all that had to be said instead of these interrogations and wild accusations.
