I see homeowners in Nassau with split level homes do this all the time in towns like Syosset and Jericho where most of the homes are splits. Anyone know how much this type of construction would cost? I assume people that do this would be to add a huge master suite on that new floor. Lets just say the entire floor consisting of the dining room, living room, and kitchen is roughly 600 sqft.

The first thing I think about is how much the property taxes would go up after the update, especially in already high-property-taxes areas.
You really can't say. All depends on the integrity of the foundation et al to take the additional weight.
Then there is running new plumbing and HVAC. Adding window........matching roof material..........
Tons of splits but I don't see that type of expansion too much compared with extensions and dormers. I've been in a couple and it was a lot of walking and turning. If I had to ballpark it I would say $100k seeing that a full floor addon to a ranch is 1.5x to 2x that. You're looking at maybe 1-2 months construction on top of permits/drawings approval time - are you sure you want to deal with this? Someone also mentioned the additional taxes which is a very valid concern. What is your price range?
I have a split as well. There is a nice amount of room above our kitchen, that my wife and I would both love to raise the roof on and make use of the space. I think the cost/benefit would be too prohibitive unfortunately. My house had the kitchen extended 5 feet in 1971 or so. The total cost was about $1,100. (structure and utilities only, no kitcken upgrades) Today that about $7k by an inflation claculator. Try to do that work today and it isnt possible.
