Hello, my husband just accepted a new position at Hofstra and we will be moving to Long Island. We don't know the area at all, and are looking for some advice on where to look for housing. Our list of what we are looking for includes:
*safe area
*family friendly
*good schools
*diverse
*accessible to Hofstra (within a 45 min commute door to door, probably by car).
*accessible to Manhattan (preferably within an hour by train, door to door)
We are looking to rent first for a couple of years, and would be very happy to find a nice townhouse community, newer construction, maybe with some amenities like a community pool and/ or playground.
Please help us narrow our search to more specific towns/ areas.

Thank you so much!!
Welcome to Long Island!
Before we can attempt to help you, please tell us how many bedrooms/bathrooms you need and what your approx. budget is. With that information, any suggestions/recommendations will be more meaningful/realistic.
With that budget, the size of the apartment and the stated preferences (incl. SD and "newer" construction), it's going to be quite difficult in Nassau County.
Take a look at possible rentals (whole or apartment in a two-family) in East Meadow, parts of Westbury, Carle Place, Bellmore, Farmingdale. You do not want to be living right near Hofstra. And the campus has been having some crime issues lately, so be careful.
You may want to look towards the Suffolk/Nassau border. More in your range and the commute would be 30-40 minutes. Avoid illegal apartments. There are many on LI. If you hire a broker you'll need 7500-10000. Brokers charge 1 months rent and YOU pay them, not the landlord. Good luck.
I was forgetting how horrible the Long Island rental situation is. Haven't rented since the 80s. Are there still any garden apartment rentals in Nassau? I know there was one in Carl Place. I believe they have three bedrooms.
I don't know what this area in like now, but there was a pretty nice one in Glen Cove on Mc Laughlin St. You could walk to Morgan Park and the beach. It was very woodsy and pretty. There is also an elementary school in the area. The apartments have 2 bedrooms and they are very spacious. Hardwood floors but nothing fancy.
At least they are legal, and less expensive to get into than if the OP were to use a broker.
Wonder if Hofstra offers any assistance in housing for new staff? If it does, maybe you can also get some basic information from it.
Does the order of your listed preference also reflect the priority? For example, what is your "immediate" need for school district? If it's immediate, you may need to find a place with nice school district to start with.
Carle Place may be a place to consider. My impression is that the following areas in Carle Place seem decent:
1. North of Westbury Ave.
2. South of Northern State Parkway
2. East of Meadowbrook State Parkway
3. West of Cherry Lane
There are a number of commentators on this forum may provide additional info about Carle Place.
The Carle Place SD is OK. Carle Place is a small city and it shares the library with neighboring Westbury. Shopping is very convenient in Carle Place since a number of stores are close- Costco, WalMart, Target, Staples, two supermarkets (Waldbaum's and StopNShop). There is a train station in Carle Place too but it is a small one so train stops are not that many (it is LIRR Port Jeff/Huntington line).
East Meadow may also be worth a look. But it's farther to train stations so the commute time to Manhattan will be more (assuming you take mass transportation to Manhattan).
Good Luck!
