I agree with this comment from the article.

No one has said that minorities can't live in Garden City. ANYONE can live in Garden City ...black, white, purple or any other color....IF they can afford it. Why do some people feel that just because they can't afford to have something that it should be given to them? We are living in a time where so many want something for nothing and aren't willing to work for it.
Every time someone says LI is too expensive - nobody said you must live here. Besides, have you seen Queens prices lately?

That poster said It perfectly. Same with the fair housing act, 'it's not fair that I can't have a house because I only make 30k a year. Give me a mortgage anyway' one of the big reasons we got into the subprime housing mess in the first place. Life isn't fair, no one is entitled to a house just because it's 'it's not fair that you can't afford it'. Same mentality.

The owners were saying their houses were just single family housing with a lot of people living in the house, like a "big family".
seems odd that these "investors" would pay premium Garden City real estate and tax prices for this purpose when there are MUCH cheaper neighborhoods close to Adelphi. And I don't think the restrictions on overnight street parking would be ideal for a house with multiple tenants/cars.

As much as the GC Village drives me nuts at times, I have to commend them for their efforts to stop student flop houses or cheap housing that will have a negative impact on us. My parents are Italian immigrants and we grew up with very little. We never once demanded that some other town needed to create cheap or subsidized housing for us. We worked hard, got an education, and moved where we needed to move.

This entitlement mentality today is ridiculous. GC is not trying to keep a certain race out of its village. What GC is trying to do is keep renters out so student to teacher ratios stay low. Nothing wrong with that.

Politically incorrect? Deal the race card.

I have family and numerous friends in the GC. It's most definitely not about skin color. It's about maintaining the status quo of the village. All of the GC residents I know have no issues with race. If you got the bucks to afford GC and maintain your property and not be a nuisance to the community then there is no issue. On my brother's block there is a black family and 2 indian families and they get on famously.

If anything it's class/status issues going on in the GC. The media and politically correctness really suck.

Agreed, but the race baiters will continue to point to this regardless:

The racial makeup of the village was 88.1% White, 1.2% African American, 0.1% Native American, 5.0% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.4% from other races, and 0.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.0% of the population.

Nice areas, less crime, more appealing to the students who walk or bicycle. Most foreign students do not have cars, so the parking restrictions aren't much of a problem. Also the large houses in GC = more students stuffed in. Don't forget, a number of these 'investors' are buying in areas where students will feel safe.

They market it to the students as being cheaper than living on campus, and the foreign 'investors' tend to advertise in ethnic newspapers or web sites to attract students of similar background. One guy over this way listed his mcmansion as 'hotel style living -- all the amenities' and then listed every conceivable thing the students would have access to -- right down to chopsticks. (I kid you not.)

With regard to large housess -- here's one currently on CL here in SB:
"11 bedrooms Many bathrooms Amazing.... Must see Too much to list!"
One of our local 'investors' is collecting over $10K a month in rent, which more than covers his mortgage and taxes.

The race card pisses me off to no end.
Its very simple. If you are blue black green camoflage or whatever, if you can afford to live in any given particular neighborhood then so be it. Whatever your budget allows you should be "allowed" to live wherever you choose within your budget. If you are truly a victim of racial steering which for example you are black and make a gajillion dollars a year and want to buy in for example Garden City and you are pushed away with whatever lame excuses you are given then that is a completely different story and a justified use of the race card. Other than that s t f u. This crap is really getting played out.
