I did this exact thread on another national forum back in '02 (I just found it). Only about 40 responded and many were actually from NY. I'd say the real answer is 50/50 do and don't.
What I found is that people who Lived in and around New England area will know more often that Long Island exists.
When you start throwing out names like Jones Beach, Citi Field, Hamptons they start to get an idea. But more interestingly and funny is that many people don't know that south east new york is a bunch of Islands in the Atlantic!
They want to know how it's possible to mow the lawn when you live in New York!
Years ago when I was in the Air Force when people asked where I was from and I told them, they assumed it was part of NYC. Then when you explain that it is a suburban area towards the Hamptons, they assume $$$.
Then why do you live here? You are by far the most negative person out here, absolutely miserable . All you do is complain and whine . Anyone can look through your posts. If you hate it so much here then move. You must be a real joy to live with.
A dozen ir so years ago I was involved in a similar conversation on a different board. As someone else had mentioned, some folks had only heard of Long Island through negative news stories. Others who've heard of it do not realize how large it actually is, and how many different communities there are.
When I was younger and still living in Massapequa, if someone asked where I was from, I would say Massapequa. There were a few occasions where the other person would tell me they know someone from Massapequa. "Do you know Joe? He's from Massapequa, too!" No clue how big LI or Massapequa was.
My favorite discovery was a college paper I found online. The author suggested tgat tge debse living conditions found on LI are what drove Joel Rivkin, Colin Ferguson, and Amy Fisher to commit their crimes.
And yet most Long Islanders would think QUEENS is "dense", but not us, lol. (and everyone here knows that despite what the map looks like, Queens is not 'part of' LI, lol).
I've been to more than half the states in the country. When I tell them LI, nearly everyone knew. They all knew it's just outside NYC and a crowded, expensive suburb.
I don't think anybody has ever asked me where LI was.
I'm always shocked when I talk about Block Island and LIers ask where that is.
