Is there a way a retired couple with a special needs adult child living on limited income, can get into a decent home in Suffolk to rent or buy We live in PA, the medical is terrible even the doctors have told us to leave . We were going to go to Florida but then my other child told us they are having a baby. they are living with her inlaws in Sufflolk so we cant stay there, My child asks cant we move back? How can we ? We would love to be involved with their baby and it would give more family opportunities for our special needs child . We are very afraid of dicey noisey neighborhood on LI after living in rural PA . Florida doctors and NY doctors were much better and I also loved the walkable stores on LI. I am a bit afraid to drive and Florida has tons of long bridgeds still I cant afford a very expensive area and dont want to be in horrible neighborhood thats why alot of NYers came to PA but they wait most times 9 months for a specialists we just have more medical needs Can yo offer any help Please dont knock us it is very hard we are moving slowley because we dont want to make a big mistake thanks

Sounds like a 2-bedroom apartment/house would suffice for your needs.

Big question is, to buy, can you qualify for a mortgage? There are a few 2-bedroom cottages/small houses out there that can be considered "affordable" by Long Island standards. What would be your limit? And then of course you have the onerous real estate taxes...

If renting, what is your budget? Decent rentals on Long Island have become scarce and prices have increased in recent years.

You still haven't sold the place in the Poconos? I don't see how you can go anywhere until that happens. Long Island doesn't seem like a good idea. It's too expensive.

low income housing in an area that is safe and within a walkable downtown? I'm going to say forget about LI. Maybe try the lottery housing projects within the city boroughs.

I would contact a few realtors in different areas around Long Island and ask them to email you when they have something that might suit your needs. There are certainly affordable places - presuming 2 social security checks, a disability check and maybe a pension or some savings - might have to get part time jobs - but once you sell the house in the poconos - you can find something. It probably won't be a single family home though - you should consider coops or condos in Suffolk - there are fairly decent places in Brookhaven. Nassau also has places in Oyster Bay & Port Washington, plus there are some places in Valley Stream and Baldwin that are mixed populations but fairly safe (just have to be careful of the exact location in these neighborhoods - one part is ok - the other not safe). You might also consider Queens. It isn't far from Nassau & taxes are much more reasonable, so are the rentals. Jackson Heights, Astoria, Bayside, all have tons of apartments at varying rates. It will take a lot of leg work - so I'd get on the internet and just start emailing realtors online and looking yourself - there's a bunch of free online websites now that will let you "house" hunt & when you find an area with prices in your range, you could investigate it further. Your kid in Suffolk should be able to do a lot of the leg work for you out there - good luck and welcome back home!
